1/4" Dowel Pins are precision-ground parallel pins for locating two parts in a machined assembly to exact position.

About Dowel Pins

Dowel Pins are precision-ground parallel cylindrical pins used to align and locate two parts in a machined assembly. Installed as an interference (press) fit into one part and an interference or slip fit into the mating part. The pin holds the two components in exact position so that bolt-up clamping forces don't introduce misalignment. Plain Black hardened steel to DIN 6325 for precision tooling; A4-70 G316 stainless to DIN 7 for corrosion-resistant and food-grade applications.

Recommended use Indoor, oiled or sacrificial-wear applications where the fastener is replaced periodically. Common in machinery internals, ground-engaging equipment subject to wear, and any high-tensile assembly that will be painted, oiled or sealed after install.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Dowel Pin and what is it used for?
A precision-ground parallel cylindrical pin used to align and locate two parts in a machined assembly.

Installed into a reamed hole in one part and either an interference (press) or slip fit into the mating part. The pin holds the two components in exact position so that bolt-up forces don't introduce misalignment. Used in milling fixtures, jig plates, gearbox housings, engine block alignment and mould tooling.

What hole size do I need?
Press fit: ream the hole approximately 0.005 to 0.02mm SMALLER than the pin nominal diameter (H7 / m6 fit). Slip fit: ream to nominal (H7 / h6).

Standard convention is to press-fit one side of the joint (locks the pin into one part) and slip-fit the other side (lets the parts separate without removing the pin). Both holes should be reamed, not just drilled. Drill alone leaves a hole too rough and oversized for precision location.

How do I install a dowel pin?
Press into the reamed hole using an arbor press, or tap squarely with a hammer and pin punch on the chamfered end.

The pin's chamfer guides it into the hole. Keep the pin square to the work face. Angling the punch will bend or deform a soft dowel. For DIN 6325 hardened dowels (60 HRC) use an arbor press wherever possible; hammer impact can spall the hardened surface.

How do I remove a dowel pin?
Push through from behind with a slightly undersized drift, OR use a slide hammer engaging the pin's tapped removal hole if it has one.

If the pin is press-fit on both sides and has no tapped hole, removal is destructive: drill the pin out or grip with vice-grips and rock free. Some DIN 7979 dowels have an internal thread specifically for slide-hammer extraction.

What strength class is this?
Refer to the product title for the property class and the head marking for the grade.

See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table.

What standard is this manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN 6325.

DIN 6325 covers hardened metric parallel dowel pins for precision location (60 HRC tool steel). DIN 7 covers parallel pins in soft material, often stainless A4-70 G316 for hygienic and corrosive environments. Match the standard to the application.

Where are dowel pins typically used?
Machined assemblies where the bolt-up must not be the alignment reference: milling fixtures, jig plates, gearbox housings, engine block alignment, mould tooling, hydraulic manifolds.

Anywhere you need two parts to come apart and go back together in EXACTLY the same position. The bolts clamp; the dowels locate.

Material & Coating

Plain Black Uncoated Carbon steel. No corrosion protection. The dark colour is a thin oxide layer from the heat treatment process, not a corrosion barrier. Appearance varies from light grey to dark black across batches due to the heat treatment process, so colour consistency is not guaranteed between orders.

Important Will corrode rapidly in any wet or humid environment. NOT suitable for outdoor or coastal use without a separate coating.

How to Measure

Fastener Length This product has no head, so the length is the overall length - measured from one end to the other.

Length Dowel pins are measured end to end. They have no head and no chamfer offset - the length quoted is the full pin length. Match the length to the combined depth of the two mating holes, leaving clearance at the blind end.
