About Countersunk Timber Screws
Self-tapping timber screws with a countersunk (bugle) head designed to pull flush with the timber surface. The largest sub-cat in the timber range covering Square, Phillips, Internal Hex and Torx drives in zinc yellow, galvanised, A2 / A4 stainless and brass finishes. AS 3566 standard with Type 17 self-drilling point.
Measure across the outside of the thread - not the shank - to get the gauge (an 8g screw measures about 4.2mm). Screw gauges have a wider tolerance than bolts, so treat it as a close match rather than exact. Then measure the length - countersunk timber screws are measured overall, head included.
Match it on the Screw Gauge and TPI chart further down this page - every gauge links straight to the product. Rule of thumb for timber: coarse threads for softwood and framing, fine threads for hardwood.

Frequently Asked Questions
Timber screws self-tap into softwood, hardwood and treated pine without a pilot hole in most cases. Pre-drill at the bit's tip diameter for hardwood, dense treated pine and pieces under 30mm wide where splitting is a risk.
Typical sizing: 8g x 50mm for fence panel work; 10g x 65mm for general framing; 14g x 75mm to 150mm for batten / structural; 18g x 100mm+ for landscape. For decking, length should reach through the deck board PLUS 30mm minimum into the joist. Compliance with AS 1684 timber framing code requires specific sizes for specific applications - check the standard.
Type 17 is the de facto standard on Australian timber screws. The point eliminates the need for a pilot hole in most softwood and most modern treated pine. For very hard timber (jarrah, ironbark, blackbutt) a pilot hole is still recommended to prevent the screw shearing at the head.
Torx bits have a star-shaped tip that resists cam-out at high torque - the preferred drive for cordless impact work. See the Torx bits range.
Class 3 finishes (Galvanised, Tykote, Zinc Yellow) are rated for inland outdoor use; Class 4 (Stainless A2 / A4) is the marine / coastal grade. Check the corrosion class on each product page against your application's exposure level.
Material & Coating
Stainless A2-70 G304 Austenitic stainless steel. Property class 70 designates a minimum tensile strength of 700 MPa with a 0.2 percent proof stress of 450 MPa. Lightly magnetic in cold-worked form, which does not affect corrosion performance.
Grade selection A2-70 G304 is the general-purpose stainless grade for outdoor and most chemical environments. A4-70 G316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, giving substantially better resistance to chlorides; A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for marine, coastal and pool environments.
Important Do not pair stainless fasteners with plain or galvanised steel components in wet service. The galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion of the less-noble metal.
Thread Pitch & Terminology
Thread Pitch (TPI)TPI stands for "threads per inch", which literally means the number of threads within each inch on a screw, a bolt or a fastener. To determine the TPI of a screw, count the number of threads contained within an inch of length on the fastener. If the screw is less than an inch long, count the threads in half an inch and multiply by 2. The higher the number, the finer the thread. For timber screws, a coarse thread (lower TPI, typically around 8 to 12) is better for softwood, structural framing and decking timber - the bigger bite into the softer fibres gives a stronger grip with less risk of stripping. A fine thread (higher TPI, typically around 24 and above) is better for hardwood, where the tight grain lets a fine thread cut cleanly without splitting the timber.
| Gauge | TPI | Thread Profile | Body Diameter (metric) | Decimal inch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2g | 26 | - | 2.2mm | 0.086″ |
| 3g | 24 | - | 2.5mm | 0.099″ |
| 4g | 22 / 24 | - | 2.9mm | 0.112″ |
| 6g | 10 / 18 | coarse / fine | 3.5mm | 0.138″ |
| 8g | 9 / 10 / 15 | coarse / coarse / medium | 4.2mm | 0.164″ |
| 9g | 9 | - | 4.5mm | 0.178″ |
| 10g | 8 / 10 / 12 / 13 | coarse / coarse / medium / medium | 4.8mm | 0.190″ |
| 12g | 10 / 11 / 12 | coarse / coarse / medium | 5.5mm | 0.216″ |
| 14g | 10 | coarse | 6.3mm | 0.250″ |

How to Measure
Fastener Length This product has a flush-fitting head, so the length is measured as the overall length - from the tip of the thread to the top of the head. The head is included in the size.
Thread Length On a screw the thread length runs from the start of the unthreaded section (called the shank) to the end of the thread. To view the thread length for this product, select a length above.
