13/64" ONSITE+ Step Tip Long Series Drill Bits are extended-length drill bits with a self-centring step-tip geometry for deep holes without a punch-mark, run from a power or pedestal drill.

About ONSITE+ Step Tip Long Series Drill Bits

ONSITE+ Long Series Step Tip drill bits combine the self-centring step-tip geometry with an extended flute and shank for deep holes. No punch-mark required and no chatter at the tip. Run them in a power drill or pedestal drill; this range is not impact rated. 3mm-13mm metric and imperial fractional.

Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a step tip drill bit and how does it differ from a standard twist drill?
The tip has a stepped pre-pilot geometry that self-centres on the workpiece without needing a punch-mark.

Standard twist drills have a chisel edge at the centre that wants a starting dimple to bite into, so they walk on hard or curved surfaces. The step-tip is a tiny pre-pilot built into the bit. It bites and holds first time, every time, even in awkward overhead or angled positions.

Do I really not need a punch-mark?
Correct. The step-tip self-centres on a flat surface.

Even on hardened steel, stainless or curved surfaces, the step-tip catches and holds. Saves the time of marking, centre-punching and starting carefully. Particularly useful in awkward overhead or angled positions where centre-punching is difficult.

What do I run this in, an impact driver or a drill?
A power drill or a pedestal (bench) drill. This bit is not impact rated - do not run it in an impact driver.

The percussive blows of an impact driver shock-load the cutting geometry and the shank, and can snap the bit or destroy the step-tip. A cordless or corded drill driver, or a pedestal drill for bench work, gives the steady rotation this bit is designed for.

Can I sharpen the step-tip?
Not really. The step-tip geometry needs a CNC grind to restore. Once the tip wears, replace the bit.

Standard twist drills can be sharpened by hand. Step-tip geometry is precise enough that hand sharpening usually destroys the self-centring action. Treat them as consumables and replace when the tip starts walking again.

What materials does this bit cut?
Steel, stainless, aluminium, timber and most plastics. Not for masonry or hardened tool steel.

The toughened HSS construction handles general engineering materials. For masonry, switch to a tungsten-carbide tipped SDS bit. For very hard tool steel or case-hardened plate, drop down to HSS Cobalt or a carbide drill.

Which one should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. The quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Quick pick for ONSITE+ Step Tip Long Series Drill Bits:

If you are drilling: Clean self-centred starts without a punch-mark, from a drill

Pick: HSS step-tip (drill driver / pedestal drill)

Tiny pre-pilot built into the cutting edge self-centres without a punch-mark. Run in a power drill or pedestal drill - this range is not impact rated.

Material & Coating

HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.

Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.
