14g (6.30mm) Painted Timber Screws are the painted self-tapping timber screw with colour-matched powder-coated head for concealed cladding, fencing and shed-sheeting fixing into timber framing - stocked in hex flange (cladding) and wafer Phillips (fencing, shed) head styles, all with the Type 17 timber tip.

About Painted Timber Screws

Painted self-tapping timber screws with colour-matched powder-coated heads, used to fix coloured sheet metal cladding (Colorbond and equivalents), fencing infill and shed sheeting to timber framing. Stocked in two head styles to match the application: hex flange (driven with a nutsetter) for cladding and roofing where a sealing washer gives weatherproof fixing, and wafer-head Phillips for fencing and shed sheeting where the flat head sits low against the sheet for a tidy finish. All variants have the Type 17 self-drilling cutting tip so they bite into pine framing without a pilot hole. Standard colours include Basalt, Cottage Green, Deep Ocean, Monument, Shale Grey, Surfmist, Wallaby and Windspray. AS 3566 Class 3 corrosion rating.

Recommended use Galvanising has been the proven outdoor coating for fasteners for decades - external building work, structural framing, fencing, decking, retaining walls, marine and coastal construction, anything exposed to weather. Newer coating advances - Class 4, Bremick B8 and Hobson X9 - build on this with longer service life and better resistance to severe coastal and industrial sites.

Not sure if this is the right screw?
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know.
1If you have a screw in hand

Measure across the outside of the thread - not the shank - to get the gauge (an 8g screw measures about 4.2mm). Screw gauges have a wider tolerance than bolts, so treat it as a close match rather than exact. Then measure the length - countersunk timber screws are measured overall, head included.

2If you know the gauge

Match it on the Screw Gauge and TPI chart further down this page - every gauge links straight to the product. Rule of thumb for timber: coarse threads for softwood and framing, fine threads for hardwood.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this and where is it used?
A painted hex flange timber screw with a colour-matched powder-coated head, used to fix coloured sheet metal cladding (e.g. Colorbond) to timber framing. The painted head matches the cladding so the fixing is visually concealed.

Driven with a hex nutsetter on a cordless impact or drill driver. The hex flange head pulls down hard onto a sealing washer (sold separately) for weatherproof fixing on roofing and cladding work.

What sealing washer do I need?
Match the sealing washer ID to the screw shank diameter. Most 8g and 10g screws take a 5mm EPDM or neoprene-bonded washer; 12g takes a 6mm; 14g takes a 7mm or 8mm.

EPDM washers are standard for Colorbond and steel cladding. Neoprene is preferred for chemical / industrial exposure. Compress to a slight bulge - over-tightening crushes the washer and lets water in; under-tightening leaves a gap.

Type 17 timber tip - drills into framing without splitting?
Yes. Type 17 is a slotted cutting tip that self-drills into softwood and treated pine without splitting. For dense hardwood framing (jarrah, ironbark) a pilot hole prevents head shear.

Pilot drill at approximately the screw root diameter for hardwood; no pilot needed for typical pine framing. The Type 17 cut also reduces over-driving on cordless impact - the screw seats more positively at the correct depth.

What nutsetter / driver size do I need?
Use a 3/8" AF nutsetter - match the AF to the screw head exactly.

Magnetic nutsetters retain the screw head during start-up - useful for overhead and one-handed cladding work. Replace nutsetters at the first sign of corner rounding to avoid stripping the screw head.

Does the painted finish stay on after impact-driving?
Yes - Bremick's NEO range and Hobson's painted hex flange screws use a powder-coat finish bonded to the head that survives standard nutsetter installation. Use a magnetic nutsetter (not a deep-cup nutsetter) to avoid scuffing the head edge.

For touch-up on chipped heads after install, manufacturer-matched touch-up pens are available through your cladding supplier.

Material & Coating

Galvanised Screws come with different coatings for different environments. The Australian standard for screws is AS 3566 - the higher the class, the more rust protection. Class 4 is our preferred minimum.

Class 4 / Bremick B8 / Hobson X9 This SKU is sold under two brands - Bremick and Hobson - with their premium coatings on a Class 4 base. Bremick's B8 and Hobson's X9 are both rated above Class 4 and protect against severe coastal and industrial environments, including beachfront work within 150 metres of breaking surf. Whichever brand arrives, the protection is equivalent.

Important Match the coating to where you're building. Class 4 is our preferred minimum and handles severe coastal sites within 1 km of the surf. For beachfront work (within 150 metres of breaking surf) or heavy industrial sites, use Bremick B8 or Hobson X9. See our full coating comparison, or send us your postcode and we'll match it for you.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (TPI)TPI stands for "threads per inch", which literally means the number of threads within each inch on a screw, a bolt or a fastener. To determine the TPI of a screw, count the number of threads contained within an inch of length on the fastener. If the screw is less than an inch long, count the threads in half an inch and multiply by 2. The higher the number, the finer the thread. For timber screws, a coarse thread (lower TPI, typically around 8 to 12) is better for softwood, structural framing and decking timber - the bigger bite into the softer fibres gives a stronger grip with less risk of stripping. A fine thread (higher TPI, typically around 24 and above) is better for hardwood, where the tight grain lets a fine thread cut cleanly without splitting the timber.

How to Measure

Fastener Length This product has a head that sits on top of the material, so the length is measured from directly under the head to the tip of the thread. The head itself is not included in the size.

Thread Length On a screw the thread length runs from the start of the unthreaded section (called the shank) to the end of the thread. To view the thread length for this product, select a length above.
