M14 (14mm) Spade Bits are flat-bottomed timber boring bits with a self-feeding screw-tip pilot, cutting much faster than a twist drill at the same diameter.

About Spade Bits

Spade bits cut flat-bottomed holes in timber much faster than a twist drill of the same diameter. Alpha TurboBORE construction with self-feeding screw-tip pilot and spurred cutting edges that score the rim cleanly. 8mm-25mm+ in 150mm standard length, plus extension bars for deeper work. Used in framing, electrical chases and plumbing rough-ins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Spade or auger: which one do I want?
Spade bits are faster and cheaper at the surface; auger bits cut cleaner deeper holes and self-feed under power.

Spade: flat-bottomed hole, cuts fast at the surface, can splinter the back face, needs operator pressure to feed. Auger: helical flute clears chips at depth, screw-tip pilot pulls the bit through under power, cleaner side walls, slower but better for deep holes. Auger wins for anything over 75mm deep or for serious framing work.

What drill do I need, and how do I avoid splintering on the back?
Any standard drill. To avoid back-face splinter, drill until the spade tip just pokes through, then flip the work and finish from the other side. Or clamp a sacrificial backing board behind.

Spade bits and augers will splinter the timber as they exit because nothing supports the wood fibres at the back face. The pilot-through-then-flip technique gives a clean hole on both faces. A backing board works for repetitive work where flipping the piece is impractical.

Can these go through nails or hidden hardware?
No. Both spade and auger bits dull or chip immediately on metal.

Use a stud finder or metal detector before drilling into framing, especially older walls where electrical staples or nail plates may be hidden. If a bit hits steel mid-cut, pull out and switch to a metal-rated twist drill to finish through the obstacle.

How do I drill straight without the bit walking?
Spade bits have a centring point at the tip. Start with light pressure, let the point engage, then commit to the cut.

On vertical or angled drilling, use a guide block clamped to the work, or a self-centring jig. For high-precision work like timber dowel joinery, a drill press gives the cleanest perpendicular hole.

Can I extend the working length for deep holes?
Yes, spade bits work with hex extension bars. BNA stocks Thundermax Quick Release Driver Bit Holders and standard extensions.

Match the extension's hex size to the bit shank. For very deep holes (over 300mm), drill in stages: 100mm at a time, withdraw to clear chips, advance again. Forcing a deep cut in one pass overheats the bit and packs the flute.

Can I sharpen these when they get blunt?
Spade bits can be touched up with a file or whetstone on the two flat cutting edges. Keep the side-spur sharp. It scores the rim of the hole.

For best results, work on a bench with the bit clamped, follow the original cutting angle, and equalise both sides. A bench grinder works for heavy reshaping but removes a lot of material quickly. Learn on cheap bits first.

Which one should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. The quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Quick pick for Spade Bits:

If you are drilling: Flat-bottomed timber holes in framing, electrical, plumbing

Pick: TurboBORE hardened tool steel spade bit

Through-hardened high-carbon tool steel optimised for timber. Self-feeding screw-tip pulls the bit through under power. Spurred cutting edges score the rim for a clean hole.
