M18 (18mm) Reduced Shank Drill Bits are twist drills with a drilling diameter larger than the shank, so an oversize hole can be drilled from a standard 13mm chuck without upgrading the drill.

About Reduced Shank Drill Bits

Reduced Shank drill bits have a drilling diameter larger than the shank, so a hole >13mm can be drilled from a standard 13mm chuck without upgrading to an industrial drill. BNA stocks 13mm-18.5mm diameters in 0.5mm steps, Gold Series HSS and HSS Black Oxide. Common on workshop drill presses and 13mm cordless drivers.

Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a reduced shank drill bit?
A twist drill whose shank is smaller than its cutting diameter, so an oversize hole can be drilled from a standard 13mm chuck.

The full 13mm-25mm cutting head sits on a 13mm shank, so a standard cordless or workshop drill can drive a bit that would otherwise need an industrial drill press. The trade-off is a bit more flex under load, so run slower and use firm pressure.

Which drill bit should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. This bit is M2 High Speed Steel; the quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Steel, wood, plastic, light stainless - everyday drillingAlpha GoldBNA's everyday production-grade Alpha Gold range. TiN coating lifts edge life roughly 30 percent over plain HSS. Best for steel, wood, plastic and light stainless work.
Value-grade general drillingBristol or black oxide drill bitsValue-grade production twist drills covering Bristol (uncoated / bright finish) and black oxide finishes. Reliable everyday choice when the production-grade premium isn't required.

What drill or chuck fits this bit?
Any standard drill chuck rated for the shank diameter. 13mm chucks cover the majority of the range; reduced shank bits also fit 13mm chucks.

Tighten the chuck on the shank, not on the flute. If the chuck slips under load, the shank is sliding. Re-tighten harder or wipe oil off the shank. Bench drills, cordless drivers and impact drivers all accept standard twist drills.

How fast should I run it, and do I need cutting fluid?
Slower is better for larger bits and harder materials. Cutting fluid keeps the cutting edge cool and clears chips.

Rule of thumb: 1mm-3mm bits at 2000-3000 RPM; 4mm-8mm at 1000-2000 RPM; 10mm-13mm at 500-1000 RPM; over 13mm under 500 RPM. Use a light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting fluid on steel. Aluminium can be drilled dry but a few drops of WD-40 cuts cleaner. Cast iron drills dry. Stainless absolutely needs fluid.

Do I need a pilot hole first?
Yes for any hole over 8mm. The pilot lets the chisel-edge of the drill cut cleanly instead of pushing through.

Drill a pilot 25-50% of the final diameter first. For example, drilling a 13mm hole, start with a 6mm pilot. Without one, the chisel edge of the drill grinds rather than cuts, the bit walks, and the tip can burn. The pilot also lets the final bit centre on the existing hole without skating.

Can I sharpen these when they get blunt?
Yes, with a drill bit sharpener or by hand on a bench grinder. The aim is to restore the 135-degree split point geometry.

Most users have moved to disposable bits because sharpening by hand needs practice. A sharpener jig (Drill Doctor or similar) holds the geometry consistently. If you sharpen by hand, keep the original lip angle and equalise the two cutting edges. An uneven sharpen drills an oversize hole.

Why won't my drill bit start cleanly on hard or curved surfaces?
A standard chisel-edge can walk on hardened, polished or curved surfaces. Use a centre punch first, or step up to an impact-rated step-tip bit.

On site, a Step Tip Drill Bit eliminates the walk by self-centring on the work without a punch-mark. On the bench, a centre punch dot gives the drill chisel-edge something to bite into.

Material & Coating

HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.

Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.
