Drill Sets are pre-packaged drill bit ranges in a sorted case, covering 1mm-13mm metric in Slimbox, Tuffbox HSS and Cobalt Tuffbox options.

About Drill Sets

Drill Sets are pre-packaged ranges of drill bits in a case that keeps the sizes sorted on site. BNA stocks Alpha 25-piece sets 1mm-13mm metric in Slimbox, Tuffbox HSS and Cobalt Tuffbox cases. Cheaper than buying each size individually, and one box keeps the range together so a missing 5mm bit doesn't stop the job.

Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What sizes come in this set?
This 29-piece imperial set runs 1/16" to 1/2" in 1/64-inch increments.

All 29 sizes in this imperial (inch) set:

1/16"5/64"3/32"7/64"1/8"
9/64"5/32"11/64"3/16"13/64"
7/32"15/64"1/4"17/64"9/32"
19/64"5/16"21/64"11/32"23/64"
3/8"25/64"13/32"27/64"7/16"
29/64"15/32"31/64"1/2"

This 29-piece range covers every common hole size for general fastener clearance. If a particular size wears out, individual replacement bits in the same series are available. Look under Jobber Drill Bits for the matching part number.

HSS or HSS Cobalt set: which is right for me?
HSS for general steel, alloy and timber. HSS Cobalt for stainless, hardened plate and exotic alloys.

If most of your drilling is mild steel, framing or timber, HSS gives the best value. If you regularly drill stainless or hardened workpieces, the Cobalt set pays for itself by lasting longer. Many tradies keep both. HSS for everyday work, Cobalt for the stainless jobs.

Are the bits replaceable individually?
Yes. When a bit wears out, order the matching individual size from the Jobber Drill Bits range and slot it back into the case.

The case holes are sized to the bit shank, not the cutting diameter, so replacement bits drop straight in. Replacing individuals means the case stays useful for years even when the cheaper sizes have been used up.

Tuffbox vs Slimbox: what's the difference?
Tuffbox is a hinge-top toolbox-style case with click closures. Slimbox is a thinner roll-up or fold-out case.

Tuffbox suits trade trucks and toolboxes where impact protection matters. Slimbox fits in a tool roll or apron pocket for site work where bulk is the enemy. Functionally both keep the bits sorted. Pick on storage style, not on the bits themselves.

Why buy a set instead of individual bits?
Cheaper per bit, easier to find the size you need, and the case keeps the 29-piece range together.

Per-bit, a 29-piece set works out to 30-40% less than buying each size individually. The bigger win is workflow. A missing 5mm bit doesn't stop the job because you have the next size up to step the hole. The case stays useful even when half the bits are worn out.

Do I need cutting compound with these bits?
For steel and stainless drilling, yes - cutting compound keeps the cutting edge cool and extends bit life many times over.

Cutting fluid is the difference between a drill bit that lasts hundreds of holes and one that dulls after a few. In stainless it is non-negotiable. BNA stocks Cutting Compound in the same order if you don't have it. Aluminium can be drilled dry or with WD-40; cast iron drills dry; timber and plastic don't need it.

Which one should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. The quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Quick pick for Drill Sets (what BNA stocks):

If you are drillingPickWhy
Steel, wood, plastic, light stainless - everyday drillingAlpha GoldBNA's everyday production-grade Alpha Gold range. TiN coating lifts edge life roughly 30 percent over plain HSS. Best for steel, wood, plastic and light stainless work.
Hardened steel, cast iron, stainless steel, high-tensile workAlpha CobaltCobalt content lets the cutting edge run hotter without dulling. Where plain HSS anneals within a few holes in stainless, Alpha Cobalt cuts cleanly through hundreds. The standard upgrade for hardened steel, cast iron, stainless and high-tensile work.

Material & Coating

HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.

Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.
