7/16" Holesaws and Accessories are Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaws and matching arbors for large-diameter clean holes from 14mm through 114mm+ in steel, stainless, timber and plastic.

About Holesaws and Accessories

Holesaws cut large-diameter clean holes (14mm-114mm+) in steel, stainless, timber and plastic. BNA stocks Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaws plus matching arbors, pilot drills and quick-release hex shanks. The cobalt-edged teeth take heat that a standard HSS holesaw cannot, so the saw cuts faster and lasts longer in stainless and hardened sheet.

Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaw and what does it cut?
This is an arbor or pilot drill, the partner piece that mounts a Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaw on the drill chuck.

Cobalt-edged teeth take more heat than a standard HSS holesaw, so the saw cuts faster and lasts longer in stainless and hardened sheet. The cup body collects the slug as it cuts. Sizes from 14mm to 114mm+. Standard for electrical cabinet entries, pipe penetrations and any large bolt hole.

Do I need an arbor and pilot drill?
Yes. The arbor mounts the holesaw on the drill, the pilot drill stabilises the saw at the start of the cut.

BNA stocks Quick Release Hex Shank Holesaw Arbors and matching HSS Pilot Drills. Pick the arbor sized for your holesaw, and replace the pilot drill when it snaps. The holesaw itself usually outlasts several pilots.

How do I match the holesaw size to the bolt or fitting I'm installing?
Match the holesaw diameter to the OD of the fitting plus a small clearance. For bolts, match to the bolt diameter plus 0.5mm-1mm.

For pipe and conduit penetrations, check the actual OD (not the nominal pipe size) and add 1mm-2mm for clearance. For electrical glands, the manufacturer prints the recommended hole size on the box.

How do I keep the saw from binding or burning?
Run at slow RPM, use cutting fluid on metal, withdraw frequently to clear chips and let the saw cool.

Holesaw RPMs are roughly half what a twist drill at the same diameter would run at. The cup teeth take a much longer cut path per revolution and overheat quickly. Withdraw every 5mm-10mm of cut to clear chips out of the cup, otherwise the slug binds and stalls the drill. A few drops of cutting fluid keeps the teeth sharp longer.

Can I cut stainless or hardened steel with this?
Yes, but use fluid, run slow, and don't push hard. The cobalt teeth are made for stainless.

Standard HSS holesaws die quickly in stainless. The cobalt teeth on these saws hold up to 250-300 degrees C without losing their edge. Keep fluid on the cut, let the saw work at its own pace, and don't try to force it. The same techniques that ruin a Cobalt twist drill ruin a Cobalt holesaw.

How do I get the slug out of the holesaw?
The pilot drill hole gives a finger or screwdriver something to lever against. Push the slug out from the back through the chip-clearing slots in the cup.

Some users tap a self-tapping screw into the pilot hole, then grip and pull. Others use compressed air through the slots. Don't try to chisel the slug out by hand. The teeth are very sharp and the slug is hot.

Which one should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. The quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Quick pick for Holesaws and Accessories:

If you are drilling: Holesaws cutting steel, stainless, timber, plastic

Pick: Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaw

Cobalt cutting teeth bonded to a tough spring-steel body. The cobalt edge takes the heat; the steel body absorbs the shock without cracking. Lasts many times longer than plain HSS in stainless.

Material & Coating

HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.

Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.
