5/16" x 18 TPI UNC Coarse Taps are the HSS cutting tool that cuts an internal thread in a pre-drilled hole, stocked in metric and imperial sizes across Taper, Second, Bottoming, Spiral Point and Spiral Flute forms.

About Taps

Taps are the cutting tools used to cut an internal thread in a pre-drilled hole. The Alpha and Sutton Tools range covers metric coarse and fine M1.6 through M24, plus imperial UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF and BSP threads. Form variants include Taper, Second / Intermediate, Bottoming (Plug), Spiral Point (Gun Tap) and Spiral Flute. High-speed-steel construction with HSSE V3 cobalt variants for harder materials.

Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this tap and what does it do?
A high-speed-steel cutting tool used to cut an internal thread in a pre-drilled hole. This is a Taper Tap - long lead taper makes this the first tap to use in a new hole, especially for hand tapping.

Taps are the standard way to add a thread to a plain hole - in metal, plastic or hardwood. Drill the hole to the correct tap drill size, then turn the tap clockwise to cut the thread. Reverse a half-turn every full turn to clear chips. The thread cut by the tap matches a standard machine screw thread.

What hole size do I drill before tapping?
The tap drill size is published on every tap product page - look in the technical specifications table.

For metric coarse: M3 needs a 2.5mm hole, M4 needs 3.3mm, M5 needs 4.2mm, M6 needs 5.0mm, M8 needs 6.8mm, M10 needs 8.5mm. For imperial UNC: 1/4-20 needs 13/64", 5/16-18 needs 17/64", 3/8-16 needs 5/16". Always check the chart - undersize hole snaps the tap, oversize hole cuts a weak thread.

Taper, Second or Bottoming - which one do I use?
Use a Taper tap first to start the thread (long lead-in chamfer), a Second tap to cut most of the thread depth, and a Bottoming tap to reach the bottom of a blind hole.

On a through hole you only need a Taper or Second tap. On a blind hole you need all three in sequence. Spiral Point and Spiral Flute taps are machine-tap variants that replace the Taper / Second / Bottoming sequence for power tapping.

What lubricant should I use?
Use cutting compound on all metal taps - extends tap life dramatically and produces a cleaner thread.

See our Cutting Compound range. Apply liberally before starting the tap and refresh every few turns. On aluminium, paraffin or kerosene works as a cutting lubricant. On plastic and timber, no lubricant is needed.

Why did my tap break in the hole?
Three causes in order: undersize tap drill hole (most common), too much torque (no lubricant, not clearing chips), or hitting hardened material the tap can't cut.

Broken taps are a workshop reality. Recovery: drill the broken portion out with a carbide drill, or use a tap extractor tool. Prevention: confirm the tap drill size, use cutting compound, clear chips every full turn by reversing the tap half a turn. HSSE V3 cobalt taps are more shock-tolerant for tough steels.

Material & Coating

HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.

Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.

How to Measure

Length The size quoted is the overall length - measured end to end.

Sizing Taps (Straight Flute) are sized by the internal thread they cut (M1.6 through M24 metric coarse and fine; #4-40 through 1 inch UNC, UNF, BSW, BSF, BSP imperial). The tap drill hole size for each thread is published on the Taps technical chart. Use cutting compound on metal taps to extend tap life and produce a cleaner thread.
