5/16" 200mm Nutsetters are the magnetic hex-cup driver for external hex head self-tapping screws, sheet metal screws and small hex nuts, sized by cup AF dimension.

About Nutsetters

Nutsetters are 1/4 inch hex shank driver bits with a hex cup at the working end that grips the external hex head of a screw or nut. Sized by hex cup AF dimension - 7mm, 8mm, 10mm and 13mm metric; 1/4, 5/16, 3/8 and 7/16 inch imperial. Most are magnetic, retaining the screw head while you start the drive.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a nutsetter?
A 1/4" hex shank driver with a hex cup at the working end that grips the external hex head of a screw or nut. The cup is sized by AF dimension across flats.

Distinct from hex (Allen) bits which drive INTERNAL hex recesses. A nutsetter wraps AROUND an external hex head; a hex bit fits INSIDE an internal hex recess. Most stocked nutsetters are magnetic - the cup retains the screw head while you start the drive.

What size do I need?
Sized by hex cup AF dimension - 7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm in metric; 1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16" in imperial.

Match the cup AF to the screw / nut head AF exactly - a 7mm cup will spin on an 8mm head, rounding the corners and stripping the head. Hex-head self-tapping screws use a 1/4" or 5/16" head on most #10 to #12 sizes; metric M4 to M8 hex flange screws use 7mm, 8mm, 10mm or 13mm.

Are nutsetters the same as sockets?
No. A nutsetter has a 1/4" hex shank that fits a hex-chuck driver. A socket has a 1/4", 3/8" or 1/2" square drive at the back and accepts a ratchet or impact wrench.

Nutsetters are for fast cordless driving of self-tappers and small hex-head fasteners; sockets are for higher-torque assembly with a ratchet or impact wrench. For mid-torque work where you want a cordless driver + sockets, use a socket adapter.

Why is my nutsetter cup wearing out fast?
The cup wears on the inside corners over time. Replace at the first sign of corner rounding to avoid stripping the screw head.

Magnetic nutsetters lose magnetic retention as the cup wears - the screw head pops out of the cup while you position it. That's the signal to swap the bit. Bright-finish cups wear faster than impact-rated black-oxide cups under repeated cordless-impact use.

What screws does this fit?
External-hex-head self-tapping screws, screws for metal (sheet metal screws), small hex bolts and small hex nuts of the matching AF.

Most-stocked sizes: 1/4" cup for #10 hex self-tappers, 5/16" cup for #12 hex self-tappers, 8mm cup for M5 hex flange, 10mm cup for M6 hex flange.

How to Measure

Sizing Nutsetters are sized by hex cup AF dimension in metric (7mm, 8mm, 10mm, 13mm) and imperial (1/4", 5/16", 3/8", 7/16"). The cup must match the hex head AF exactly - undersized cup will spin on the head, rounding the corners and stripping the head.

How to measure a driver bit Pick the bit by the hex cup AF dimension - measure the fastener head with a calliper, not the bit cup. The shank is the bit's clamping end - 1/4" hex is the universal standard across cordless drivers, impact drivers and bit holders. The overall length determines reach: 25mm insert for general use, 50mm to 90mm power bits with a torsion zone for impact drivers, 116mm for Hilti autofeed, long-shank Allen keys for recessed socket cap screws. Cross-check the tip dimension against the screw head before driving - an undersized bit cams out and strips the recess.

Measurements Accurate to the relevant standard and should be used as a guide only. They are either hand-measured or taken from suppliers' catalogues. We only stock Alpha for this product; substituting another brand is rare and would always be confirmed with you first.

Magnetism

This product is magnetised. The tip / cup retains a fastener through alignment and engagement, which speeds work in overhead, awkward or one-handed install scenarios. Across the wider Driving range, magnetised bits, holders and nutsetters speed install by holding the fastener on the tip through alignment; non-magnetised tools are preferred for electronics, magnetic-sensor proximity and any work where stray magnetism on the fastener would cause downstream issues. Check the specification table above for the per-SKU value before ordering for magnetism-sensitive applications.
