Long-shank L-format Hobson Allen keys for installing internal-hex socket cap screws by hand. Sized by hex AF dimension - 1.5mm to 10mm metric. Includes Post Hex (security / pin-in-hex) variants for tamper-resistant fasteners. Essential for low-volume bench assembly, field service and access to recessed sockets.

Recommended use Indoor and dry-environment use only. Common in automotive, machinery and electrical assembly where the bolt is not exposed to weather, condensation or wet service.

Material & Coating

Zinc Electroplated zinc on carbon steel. A thin (5 to 12 micron) bright (clear-passivated) zinc layer applied by electrolysis. Bright silvery finish.

Important NOT suitable for outdoor, wet, marine or treated-timber applications. The thin coating is consumed quickly by rainwater or treated-pine preservatives. For outdoor use, specify hot-dip galvanised.

How to Measure

Sizing Allen / hex keys are sized by AF (across flats) dimension - 1.5mm to 10mm metric and 1/16" to 3/8" imperial. The same AF fits the matching socket cap, button head, countersunk socket and grub screw. Post Hex security keys have a centre hole at the working end.

How to measure a driver bit Pick the bit by the AF (across flats) dimension of the hex tip (1.5mm to 10mm metric or 1/16" to 3/8" imperial). The shank is the bit's clamping end - 1/4" hex is the universal standard across cordless drivers, impact drivers and bit holders. The overall length determines reach: 25mm insert for general use, 50mm to 90mm power bits with a torsion zone for impact drivers, 116mm for Hilti autofeed, long-shank Allen keys for recessed socket cap screws. Cross-check the tip dimension against the screw head before driving - an undersized bit cams out and strips the recess.
