6.4mm (1/4") Structural Countersunk Rivets are high-strength flush-finishing blind rivets with locked-in mandrels for load-bearing joints that also need a smooth work face.

About Structural Countersunk Rivets

Structural Countersunk Rivets combine the flush-finish of a countersunk head with the high-shear locked-mandrel mechanism of a structural rivet. Used where both a smooth work face AND load-bearing rivet strength are needed: trailer body panels, transport (truck and bus) skin, vibrating panels with flush requirements, and aircraft-adjacent maintenance work. Requires a countersunk recess in the host hole.

Recommended use Aluminium-to-aluminium assemblies (frames, panels, ducting) where matching the host material avoids galvanic corrosion. Also used in electrical work where any steel content would interfere with conductivity or magnetic neutrality.

What is a structural blind rivet?

A high-strength blind rivet with a mechanical lock that retains the mandrel inside the body after install. The retained mandrel gives the rivet much higher shear and tensile strength than a standard pop rivet of the same diameter.

Brand names include Anlock, Mega Lock, Magna Lok, Avdel Avseal, Huck Magna-Bulb. All work on the same principle: the rivet sets like a normal pop rivet but a locking ring captures the mandrel as it breaks, leaving it permanently inside the body. Used in trailer manufacture, transport (truck and bus bodies), light structural steel, and any vibrating assembly where a standard rivet would loosen or lose strength when the mandrel falls out.

How does a structural rivet differ from a standard one?

Higher shear and tensile rating, mandrel retention (the spent mandrel stays inside the rivet body), and a wider grip range than the equivalent standard rivet.

Standard pop rivets rely entirely on the body material for clamp and shear; their mandrel breaks off and falls out, leaving a hollow body. Structural rivets keep the mandrel locked in, which doubles or triples the rivet's effective shear area and prevents the body collapsing under load. Worth the extra cost on any joint that sees vibration, impact or dynamic load.

What grip range do I need?

The grip range for this structural rivet is 4.30 - 12.10mm. Match it to the combined panel thickness of the joint.

Structural rivets have noticeably wider grip ranges than the equivalent standard rivet, so one product often covers several panel-thickness scenarios. Always confirm the grip range includes your actual stack-up.

What hole size do I drill?

This rivet's body diameter is 6.4mm (1/4"). Drill the hole 0.1mm larger than the body diameter so the rivet fits in the hole.

Drill approximately 0.1 to 0.2mm larger than the body diameter. Hole size tolerance on structural rivets is tighter than on standard rivets; an oversize hole reduces the rivet's load rating.

What tool do I need to set this rivet?

A rivet tool rated for structural rivets based on the body diameter. Hand-squeeze tools rated for 6.4mm structural work; larger and higher-volume work needs a pneumatic or battery rivet gun.

Setting a 6.4mm structural rivet by hand is hard work; consider a battery rivet gun for any volume install. Confirm the tool's nose-piece matches the rivet diameter before starting.

Where are structural rivets typically used?

Trailer manufacture, truck and bus body assembly, light structural steel, mining and heavy equipment, any vibrating panel joint.

Anywhere the joint sees real shear load, vibration, or impact. The locked-in mandrel is the difference: a standard pop rivet under cyclic load eventually loses its mandrel and slackens; a structural rivet stays tight.

Material & Coating

Shell (body) and Stem (mandrel) Both the shell and the stem are aluminium. The lightest possible blind-rivet construction and the only common rivet with no steel content at all.

Important Lower shear strength than rivets with a steel stem. Not suitable for load-bearing joints; pick a structural rivet for those.

How to Measure

Rivet Length This is a countersunk rivet, so the length is the overall length - measured from the top of the rivet head to the bottom of shell body, excluding the mandrel bubble at the end. The head sits flush inside the countersunk hole and is included in the size.
