About Measuring Tapes & Rulers
Sterling Ultimax double-sided metric and imperial tape measures. Stocked in 5m, 8m and 10m lengths with EC Class II accuracy. The double-sided blade carries metric on one face and imperial on the other for cross-unit work.

Stocked in 5m, 8m and 10m lengths. Choose by the longest measurement you'll routinely make - longer tapes are heavier but reach further.
Single-sided tapes have the graduations on one face only. Double-sided gives twice the visibility - you can read the dimension whether the tape is right-way-up or upside-down.
For precision metrology work, use a digital calliper or micrometer instead. Tape measures are for construction and trade work where 1mm accuracy is sufficient.
The hook on the blade end is loose by 0.5 to 1mm - that's by design so internal measurements (where the hook is pushed in) and external measurements (where the hook is pulled out) read the same.
A folding ruler is useful for short, repeatable measurements where a tape measure would over-reach.
Measurement
Length The size quoted is the overall length - measured end to end.
How to use a tape measure Hook the bent metal end-tab onto the edge of what you're measuring. Pull the blade taut (don't stretch it - over-pulling adds error). Read the graduation directly above your reference point. For inside measurements (between two walls), push the end-tab against one face, then add the stated case length printed on the back of the case to your reading.
The end-tab is intentionally loose by 0.5 to 1mm. That movement compensates for the tab's own thickness so internal measurements (tab pushed in) and external measurements (tab hooked over) read the same. Don't tighten the rivets to fix the wobble.
For long single measurements, lock the blade with the thumb-slide so it stays out when you let go. Always retract slowly when you've finished - a snap-back retract is the fastest way to bend the blade and kill the tape.
