M8 (8mm) Masonry Drill Bits are tungsten-carbide-tipped drills for concrete, brick, stone and block, in SDS Plus 2 Head, SDS Plus 4 Head and straight-shank styles from 4mm to 25mm+ diameter.

About Masonry Drill Bits

Masonry drill bits cut concrete, brick, stone and block with a tungsten-carbide tip brazed to an S2 Chrome Vanadium Steel shank. BNA stocks German-cut SDS Plus 2 Head, SDS Plus 4 Head and straight-shank styles in 4mm-25mm+ diameters and lengths from 110mm to 460mm. The 4-head pattern cuts faster in reinforced concrete; the 2-head pattern is the everyday standard for brick and block.

Recommended use Concrete, brick, stone and block drilling. The only practical material for hammer-drill masonry work. Variants: SDS Plus 2 Head for everyday brick and standard concrete, SDS Plus 4 Head for heavily reinforced concrete, straight shank for non-SDS hammer drills.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's a masonry drill bit and what does it cut?
A drill bit with a tungsten-carbide tip brazed to a chrome vanadium shank, designed to cut concrete, brick, stone and block.

The carbide tip is harder than the aggregate in the masonry. The shank flutes clear dust as the tip chips its way through. Used with a hammer drill (SDS or rotary), the tip is hammered against the work while the shank rotates.

SDS Plus 2 Head or 4 Head: which one do I want?
The 2 head pattern is the everyday standard for brick, block and standard concrete. The 4 head pattern cuts faster in reinforced concrete because four edges share the load.

2 head: lower cost, faster in soft masonry, the all-rounder. 4 head: roughly 30% faster in heavily reinforced concrete because each edge does less work per impact. Straight shank: for chuck-style hammer drills without an SDS collet.

What drill do I need to use this in?
A hammer drill with a standard chuck for straight shank bits, or an SDS Plus rotary hammer for SDS shanks.

Standard cordless drivers will spin a masonry bit but cannot deliver the hammer action that lets the carbide tip chip. The cutting comes from impact, not rotation. Using a non-hammer drill on masonry burns the tip and barely cuts.

How do I match the bit size to the anchor I'm fitting?
Check the anchor manufacturer's recommended hole size, which is usually printed on the box or anchor body.

For dynabolts, sleeve anchors and chemical anchors, the bit diameter must match the anchor body diameter (not the bolt thread). Drill the hole to the depth printed on the anchor, blow it out clean, set the anchor per the manufacturer's torque or settled-depth instruction.

Why are the tips chipping or burning?
Too much pressure, too fast rotation, or no hammer action.

Let the hammer do the work. Firm pressure, not maximum pressure. If the dust comes out grey rather than the colour of the masonry, the tip is overheating. Pull out, let it cool, check that hammer mode is on. Hitting steel rebar inside concrete will chip a carbide tip. Withdraw and offset the hole if you hit reinforcement.

Can I drill tile, pavers or lightweight block with this?
Tile needs a glass/tile bit (different carbide grade); pavers and lightweight block are fine with a standard masonry bit at low speed.

For ceramic or porcelain tile, use a dedicated tile bit and run very slow without hammer. For pavers and aerated concrete block, the standard SDS bit works but at much lower speed. Hammer setting will crack the work.

Which one should I pick?
Match the bit to what you're drilling. The quick-pick below shows what BNA stocks in this range and what each one is for.

Quick pick for Masonry Drill Bits:

If you are drilling: Concrete, brick, stone, block

Pick: Tungsten Carbide tipped (TCT) on chrome vanadium shank

Tungsten carbide is harder than the silica and aggregate in masonry. The only practical material for hammer-drill masonry work. SDS Plus 2 Head for everyday brick and concrete; 4 Head for heavily reinforced concrete.

Material & Coating

Tungsten Carbide TCT (TCT) tip brazed to an S2 Chrome Vanadium Steel shank. Tungsten carbide is significantly harder than the silica, granite and feldspar aggregates in concrete, so the tip chips rather than grinds through masonry.

Important Use with a hammer drill in hammer mode. Standard cordless drivers will spin a masonry bit but cannot deliver the hammer action that lets the carbide tip chip. Hitting rebar will chip a carbide tip immediately; withdraw and offset the hole if you hit reinforcement.
