About ONSITE+ Impact Step Tip Drill Bits
ONSITE+ Impact Step Tip drill bits have a self-centring step-tip geometry plus a toughened shank built for impact-driver chucks. No chatter at the tip and no snapped shank under percussive torque. 3mm-13mm metric and imperial fractional, the default impact-driver drill bit for steel, alloy and timber on site.
Recommended use General steel, alloy, brass, aluminium and timber drilling. Most cost-effective option for everyday workshop and site work. Holds an edge for hundreds of holes in mild steel when used with cutting fluid.
Frequently Asked Questions
Standard twist drills have a chisel edge at the centre that wants a starting dimple to bite into, so they walk on hard or curved surfaces. The step-tip is a tiny pre-pilot built into the bit. It bites and holds first time, every time. The toughened shank is the second half of the design. Standard drill bits snap at the chuck shoulder under impact-driver percussion.
Even on hardened steel, stainless or curved surfaces, the step-tip catches and holds. Saves the time of marking, centre-punching and starting carefully. Particularly useful in awkward overhead or angled positions where centre-punching is difficult.
Impact-rated means the shank is harder than the standard drill bit shank, won't snap at the chuck under percussive torque, and the cutting tip is heat-treated to survive impact-driver speeds. They run in a standard drill driver too. They just shine in impact mode.
Standard twist drills can be sharpened by hand. Step-tip geometry is precise enough that hand sharpening usually destroys the self-centring action. Treat them as consumables and replace when the tip starts walking again.
The toughened HSS construction handles general engineering materials. For masonry, switch to a tungsten-carbide tipped SDS bit. For very hard tool steel or case-hardened plate, drop down to HSS Cobalt or a carbide drill.
Quick pick for ONSITE+ Impact Step Tip Drill Bits:
If you are drilling: Sheet metal, panel work, on-site drilling from an impact driver
Pick: Toughened HSS step-tip (impact-rated)
Tiny pre-pilot built into the cutting edge self-centres without a punch-mark. Toughened shank survives impact-driver percussion. The default site-work pick.
Material & Coating
HSS M2 high-speed steel (HSS). The everyday cutting-tool steel for drill bits. Hardness approximately 800 to 900 HV with an operating temperature range up to ~600 degrees C before the cutting edge anneals.
Important Use cutting fluid (light machine oil, kerosene or proper cutting compound) on steel and stainless to keep the cutting edge cool. Without fluid, temperature rises into the annealing range and the edge dulls quickly. Aluminium can be drilled dry; cast iron drills dry.
