How it works: resin per hole fills the annular gap around the anchor - pi/4 x (drill diameter squared minus rod diameter squared) x embedment. The fill mark height is how far up the empty hole to dispense resin so it fills to the top once the anchor is pushed in. The wastage allowance covers resin purged when priming a new mixing nozzle and minor overfill.

How to use the calculator

Choose your adhesive, then the anchor type and size - the drill diameter and rod diameter fill in automatically, and you can override the drill diameter if your product specifies a different hole. Why anchor and drill size both matter

Chemical anchoring works by filling the ring-shaped gap between the wall of the drilled hole and the anchor. A larger hole, a thinner rod or a deeper embedment all increase the resin needed. Because the calculation depends on the difference between the two diameters squared, even a 2 mm change in hole size noticeably changes how far a cartridge goes - which is why using the manufacturer's specified drill diameter matters.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between epoxy, vinylester and polyester?

It comes down to strength, cure speed and cost. Pure epoxy is the strongest and most durable, making it the choice for the highest loads, deep embedment, rebar and safety-critical or seismic fixings - and it works in dry, damp and water-filled holes - though it cures more slowly. Hybrid resins blend epoxy-level strength with a faster cure. Vinylester sits in the middle: high strength with a quicker set, ideal for everyday structural and trade fixings. Polyester is the most economical and fast-curing, suited to medium-duty and high-volume non-structural work such as fencing and balustrade posts. As a rule of thumb, the heavier or more critical the load, the closer to epoxy you should be; the lighter the job, the further toward polyester. How much chemical anchor adhesive do I need per hole?

The amount equals the volume of the drilled hole minus the volume taken up by the rod or rebar - the ring-shaped gap around the anchor. The calculator above works this out from your drill diameter, anchor diameter and embedment depth.

What drill diameter should I use for my anchor?

Selecting a threaded rod or rebar size fills in a typical recommended drill diameter automatically. Always confirm it against the specific adhesive's technical data sheet, as the required hole size can vary between resin systems; you can override the drill diameter in the calculator if needed.

What is the fill mark height?

It is how far up the empty hole to dispense resin before inserting the anchor. As the rod is pushed in it displaces resin up the annular gap, so filling to this mark helps the hole fill to the top without excessive waste. Inject from the bottom of the hole upwards to avoid trapping air.

How many cartridges will I get through?

Divide the usable cartridge volume by the resin needed per hole. The calculator shows an approximate holes-per-cartridge figure and rounds the total up to whole cartridges, since part-cartridges can't be carried between separate pours once mixed. The comparison cards show the count at 5%, 10% and 15% wastage.

Does the calculator account for hollow or perforated base materials?

No. The estimate assumes a solid base material such as concrete or solid masonry. Hollow brick, hollow block and perforated substrates use sieve sleeves and typically consume more resin - refer to the manufacturer's data for those applications.
