About Hex Bolts & Set Screws
Hex Bolts and Set Screws are the workhorses of the bolting world. The default fastener whenever you need to clamp two parts together with a spanner on both ends. Six-sided head driven with a spanner or socket, and a fully or partially threaded shank. A hex bolt is partially threaded (plain shank under the head); a hex set screw is fully threaded right up to the head. Used for metal-to-metal joints, machinery assembly, structural framing, and any application that needs reliable clamp load.
Recommended use Indoor and dry-environment use only. Common in automotive, machinery and electrical assembly where the bolt is not exposed to weather, condensation or wet service.
Compare your fastener to our visual size guide to confirm M-size, pitch and length.
Match your spanner / socket AF (across-flats) to the bolt size it fits. Our reference chart covers every metric and imperial size we stock.
Frequently Asked Questions
Partial thread is preferred where the unthreaded shank passes through the joint (better bearing area). Full thread is used where the joint clamps near the head.
See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table and head markings.
The standard defines head dimensions, thread tolerance, mechanical properties and the marking convention on the head.
Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.
Add a spring washer or Nyloc nut if the joint is subject to vibration. For metal-to-metal structural connections, hardened washers may be required.
Refer to the Material & Coating section above for the full environmental rating of this finish.
All plain-carbon and alloy steel fasteners are magnetic. Zinc plating, hot-dip galvanising and zinc-flake coatings do not change this. The magnetism comes from the steel core, not the surface treatment.
Material & Coating
Zinc Electroplated zinc on carbon steel. A thin (5 to 12 micron) bright (clear-passivated) zinc layer applied by electrolysis. Bright silvery finish.
Important NOT suitable for outdoor, wet, marine or treated-timber applications. The thin coating is consumed quickly by rainwater or treated-pine preservatives. For outdoor use, specify hot-dip galvanised.
Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.
Thread Pitch & Terminology
Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.25mm fine pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.25mm apart.
How to Measure
Fastener Length If the head sits on top of the material, measure from under the head to the end of the thread. If the head sits flush with the material (countersunk style), measure the overall length including the head.
Thread Length On a bolt the thread length runs from the start of the unthreaded section (called the shank) to the end of the thread. Set screws are fully threaded. If the length is 75mm, the thread length is 75mm. To view the thread length, select a length above.
Measurements Accurate to the relevant standard and should be used as a guide only. They are either hand-measured or taken from suppliers' catalogues. We only stock Hobson for this product; substituting another brand is rare and would always be confirmed with you first.
