About Shoulder Insulating Bushing Washers

Shoulder Washers (insulating bushing washers) are nylon stepped washers with a projecting collar that fits through the host hole, separating the bolt shank from the surrounding material. The nylon barrier stops metal-on-metal contact, preventing the galvanic corrosion that occurs when dissimilar metals meet in the presence of moisture - stainless bolts in aluminium, steel bolts in brass, any mixed-metal joint exposed to weather, salt or condensation. Ideal for marine fittings, outdoor structures, automotive trim, electrical / PCB mounting where the bolt must not touch the copper, and any application that needs chemical, electrical or thermal isolation. Natural nylon body.

Recommended use Electrical assembly (non-conductive), food and pharmaceutical equipment, marine fittings where weight matters, and any application that needs chemical or electrical insulation. Not for high-load structural use; nylon has lower tensile strength than carbon or stainless steel.

Material & Coating

Nylon PA 6.6 (also called polyamide 66) is the standard engineering polymer used for non-metallic fasteners. Nylon fasteners are non-conductive, non-magnetic, lightweight and chemically resistant. Most commonly supplied as Hobson-brand in the BNA range.

Important Nylon is hygroscopic. It absorbs water from the surrounding environment, which softens the material over time and reduces tensile strength. For wet or high-humidity service consider this in the design margin.

When water or moisture is absorbed by Nylon, it behaves like a plasticizer in plastics, reducing the tensile strength and stiffness, and increasing elongation, impact strength and energy-absorbing characteristics.

How to Order the Right Size Washer

Sizing Shoulder bushing washers have four sizes that matter: the inside diameter (the screw or bolt that passes through), the shoulder outside diameter (the panel hole the shoulder sits in), the shoulder length (the panel thickness it insulates through), and the flange outside diameter (the bearing face under the head). The shoulder must fit the panel hole and be at least as long as the panel is thick to fully insulate the fastener. All four sizes are in the specifications table above.
