M16 (16mm) x 2.00p Metric Coarse Hex Standard Nuts are default six-sided hex nuts for general fastening, supplied in every common finish and class.

About Hex Standard Nuts

Hex Standard Nuts are the default hex-form nut: six flats for spanner or socket drive, full thread height for full clamp capacity. Pair with any bolt of matching diameter and pitch. Supplied across the full BNA range of finishes (galvanised, zinc plated, stainless A2 and A4, plain black, brass and nylon) and class ratings.

Not sure what nut you have?
Two ways to identify it - whichever is easier with what is in front of you.
1If you have the nut

Find the spanner that fits it snugly, then measure the hole. Our nut identification chart lists every metric and imperial nut we stock side by side, sorted by spanner size.

Open the nut identification chart ›

2If you have its bolt

The fastest check is the male thread: the right nut spins onto its bolt by hand with no force. Identify the bolt size and pitch first with our bolt and screw guide, and the nut follows.

Frequently Asked Questions

What bolt does this nut fit?
Any bolt with a matching M16 (16mm) x 2.00mm coarse thread pitch.

The nut must match the bolt's diameter AND pitch (metric) or TPI (imperial). A M16 (16mm) x 2.00 coarse nut will not engage a bolt with a different pitch, even when the diameter is the same. Strength class of the nut should equal or exceed the bolt class.

What strength class is this?
Stainless A4-70 G316. Property class 70 (700 MPa minimum tensile).

See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table.

What standard is this manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN 934.

Standards specify the nut's head dimensions, thread tolerance, and minimum strength class. Always pair the nut with a bolt to the equivalent standard for a guaranteed fit.

What spanner / socket size do I need?
Spanner / socket size: 24mm.

Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.

Will the thread gall when I tighten this nut?
Stainless on stainless tends to gall. Use an anti-seize compound and tighten slowly.

Galling is the cold-welding of two stainless surfaces under load. Apply a nickel- or copper-based anti-seize to the bolt thread before assembly, avoid impact drivers, and stop tightening immediately if the nut feels hot or rough.

Where are these nuts typically used?
Anywhere a matching bolt needs to be clamped down: machinery assembly, structural connections, brackets, fittings.

Nuts are the half of the bolted joint that lets it come apart again. Match diameter, pitch and class to the bolt; add a flat washer under the nut to spread load on the clamped face.

Material & Coating

Stainless A4-70 G316 Austenitic stainless steel. Property class 70 designates a minimum tensile strength of 700 MPa with a 0.2 percent proof stress of 450 MPa. Lightly magnetic in cold-worked form, which does not affect corrosion performance.

Grade selection A2-70 G304 is the general-purpose stainless grade for outdoor and most chemical environments. A4-70 G316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, giving substantially better resistance to chlorides; A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for marine, coastal and pool environments.

Important Do not pair stainless fasteners with plain or galvanised steel components in wet service. The galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion of the less-noble metal.

Class Stainless fasteners are classified by property class: A2-35 / A2-50 / A2-70 in G304 stainless, and A4-40 / A4-70 / A4-80 (Bumax 88) in G316. The first digit indicates the alloy and the second is the minimum tensile strength in 100 MPa increments (e.g. A4-70 = 700 MPa). See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 2.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 2.00mm apart.

How to Measure

A nut is named after the bolt it fits. An M10 nut fits an M10 bolt - the 10mm is the bolt's diameter, not anything on the nut itself.

The two quick checks are the spanner size across the flats, and the hole, which always measures smaller than the named size (an M10 nut reads about 8.5mm through the hole).

The most reliable test of all: thread it onto a bolt you know. The right nut spins on by hand with no force.
