M16 (16mm) x 2.00p Metric Coarse Hex Bolts & Set Screws are general-purpose six-sided-head bolts used to clamp two parts together with a spanner on the head and a nut on the other side.

About Hex Bolts & Set Screws

Hex Bolts and Set Screws are the workhorses of the bolting world. The default fastener whenever you need to clamp two parts together with a spanner on both ends. Six-sided head driven with a spanner or socket, and a fully or partially threaded shank. A hex bolt is partially threaded (plain shank under the head); a hex set screw is fully threaded right up to the head. Used for metal-to-metal joints, machinery assembly, structural framing, and any application that needs reliable clamp load.

Not sure if this is the right size or thread?
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know about your fastener.
1If you know the fastener diameter

Compare your fastener to our visual size guide to confirm M-size, pitch and length.

2If you have the spanner or socket

Match your spanner / socket AF (across-flats) to the bolt size it fits. Our reference chart covers every metric and imperial size we stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between an M16 (16mm) Hex Bolt and a Hex Set Screw?
A hex bolt has a partially threaded shank with a plain section under the head. A hex set screw is fully threaded.

Partial thread is preferred where the unthreaded shank passes through the joint (better bearing area). Full thread is used where the joint clamps near the head.

What is the strength rating of this M16 (16mm) Hex Bolt?
Stainless A2-70 G304. Property class 70 (700 MPa minimum tensile).

See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table.

What standard is an M16 (16mm) Hex Bolt manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN933.

The standard defines head dimensions, thread tolerance, mechanical properties and the marking convention on the head.

What spanner / driver size do I need for an M16 (16mm) Hex Bolt?
Drive type: Hex. Spanner / socket size: 24mm.

Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.

Should I use a washer with this M16 (16mm) Hex Bolt?
Yes. A flat washer under the bolt head and under the nut spreads bearing load and protects the surface.

Add a spring washer or Nyloc nut if the joint is subject to vibration. For metal-to-metal structural connections, hardened washers may be required.

Can M16 (16mm) Hex Bolts be used outdoors or in wet environments?
Yes. Stainless steel is rated for outdoor, wet and (A4) marine use.

A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for coastal applications within 300m of the sea because the 2 to 3 percent molybdenum content resists chloride pitting.

Are M16 (16mm) Hex Bolts magnetic?
Lightly magnetic. Cold-worked austenitic stainless (A2, A4) shows some magnetism, especially in smaller diameters. This does not affect corrosion performance.

Cold-working during head forming and thread rolling converts some austenite to martensite, which is magnetic. The base alloy is non-magnetic; the residual magnetism does not affect corrosion performance or strength.

Material & Coating

Stainless A2-70 G304 Austenitic stainless steel. Property class 70 designates a minimum tensile strength of 700 MPa with a 0.2 percent proof stress of 450 MPa. Lightly magnetic in cold-worked form, which does not affect corrosion performance.

Grade selection A2-70 G304 is the general-purpose stainless grade for outdoor and most chemical environments. A4-70 G316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, giving substantially better resistance to chlorides; A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for marine, coastal and pool environments.

Important Do not pair stainless fasteners with plain or galvanised steel components in wet service. The galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion of the less-noble metal.

Class Stainless fasteners are classified by property class: A2-35 / A2-50 / A2-70 in G304 stainless, and A4-40 / A4-70 / A4-80 (Bumax 88) in G316. The first digit indicates the alloy and the second is the minimum tensile strength in 100 MPa increments (e.g. A4-70 = 700 MPa). See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 2.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 2.00mm apart.

How to Measure

Fastener Length This product has a head that sits on top of the material, so the length is measured from directly under the head to the tip of the thread. The head itself is not included in the size.

Thread Length On a screw the thread length runs from the start of the unthreaded section (called the shank) to the end of the thread. Set screws are fully threaded. If the length is 75mm, the thread length is 75mm. To view the thread length, select a length above.
