M4 (4mm) Wave Washers are wave-pressed flat washers providing light axial preload, for bearing preload, fan mounts and electronics chassis.

About Wave Washers

Wave Washers are flat washers pressed into a wave (sine) shape, used to provide light axial preload between two parts. Lower spring rate than a Belleville and gentler than a split spring. Common in light bearing preload, fan-blade mounts, electronics chassis, and any assembly that needs to take up tolerance under a small spring load. DIN 137B in stainless A2-70 G304.

How to measure washers
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know.
1If you know your bolt size

Washers are named by the bolt they fit: an M10 washer suits an M10 bolt. The inside diameter is slightly larger than the bolt so it slides on. Our guide covers every size and washer type we stock.

2If you have a washer in hand

Measure the inside diameter (ID), outside diameter (OD) and thickness, as shown in the drawing.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is this washer for?
A wave washer is a flat washer pressed into a wave (sine) shape, used to provide light axial preload between two parts. Lower spring rate than a Belleville.

Common in light bearing preload, fan-blade mounts, electronics chassis, and any assembly that needs to take up tolerance under a small spring load. DIN 137B.

How is this different from a lock washer?
A lock washer's job is to resist bolt rotation (anti-vibration). A resilient washer's job is to maintain preload through temperature change, material creep and slight loosening. Different problem, different fix.

If the joint loses preload over time but the bolt stays in place, you need a resilient washer (Belleville, wave). If the bolt actually rotates and backs out, you need a lock washer (Schnorr, Nord-Lock, Nyloc nut).

What bolt size does this fit?
Match the washer's nominal bore size to the bolt diameter.

Outside diameter, thickness and free-state height are all product-specific and govern the washer's spring rate. Check the dimensions table for the spring force you need.

What standard is this manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN 137B.

Common standards: DIN 137A (curved), DIN 137B (wave), DIN 6796 / DIN 2093 (Belleville disc spring). Belleville stacking arrangements are documented in DIN 2092.

Where are these typically used?
Bearing preload, motor mounts, valve assemblies, electronics chassis, brake hardware, fan-blade mounts, and any joint where preload must be maintained over time.

Specify the spring profile by load type: light slack take-up (curved), light bearing preload (wave), controlled high-force preload (Belleville).

Material & Coating

Stainless A2-70 G304 Austenitic stainless steel. Property class 70 designates a minimum tensile strength of 700 MPa with a 0.2 percent proof stress of 450 MPa. Lightly magnetic in cold-worked form, which does not affect corrosion performance.

Grade selection A2-70 G304 is the general-purpose stainless grade for outdoor and most chemical environments. A4-70 G316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, giving substantially better resistance to chlorides; A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for marine, coastal and pool environments.

Important Do not pair stainless fasteners with plain or galvanised steel components in wet service. The galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion of the less-noble metal.

Class Stainless fasteners are classified by property class: A2-35 / A2-50 / A2-70 in G304 stainless, and A4-40 / A4-70 / A4-80 (Bumax 88) in G316. The first digit indicates the alloy and the second is the minimum tensile strength in 100 MPa increments (e.g. A4-70 = 700 MPa). See the head marking chart and full strength table.

How to Order the Right Size Washer

Washer sizing Washer sizes can be confusing, so here is the quickest way to find the right one. If you already have a bolt or screw, match the bolt size: an M6 bolt takes an M6 washer, M10 takes M10, and so on. Look for the size at the start of the description (e.g. 'M6 Flat Round Washer').

If you only have a loose washer to match, measure the inside diameter and pick the next size down. The washer's inside is always slightly larger than the matching bolt so it slides on freely. For example, an inside measurement of approximately 6.50mm means you need an M6 washer; 17.25mm means you need an M16 washer.

The outside diameter is measured outside-to-outside. Thickness varies between batches - washers are not precision-made fasteners and slight variations are normal. All published measurements on this site should be used as a guide only.
