M6 (6mm) Hex Coach Screws are heavy-duty hex-headed timber screws with a coarse single-start wood thread, used to fix timber to timber or to anchor fittings into hardwood.

About Hex Coach Screws

Hex Coach Screws are heavy-duty timber fasteners with a hex head and a coarse single-start wood thread. The hex head is driven with a spanner or socket and the broad flat under-head bears against the timber face, preventing the screw from pulling through. Commonly used to fix timber to timber, timber to steel, or to anchor structural fittings into hardwood or treated pine. Typical applications include deck framing, ledger plates, post brackets, retaining walls and outdoor furniture.

Recommended use The standard outdoor finish for timber framing, fencing, decking, retaining walls and treated-timber contact (H3 and H4 treated pine). Decades of corrosion protection in most outdoor and rural environments.

Not sure if this is the right size or thread?
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know about your fastener.
1If you know the fastener diameter

Compare your fastener to our visual size guide to confirm M-size, pitch and length.

2If you have the spanner or socket

Match your spanner / socket AF (across-flats) to the bolt size it fits. Our reference chart covers every metric and imperial size we stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are M6 (6mm) Hex Coach Screws used for?
Fixing timber to timber, timber to steel, and anchoring fittings into hardwood or treated pine.

Common in deck framing, ledger plates, post brackets, retaining walls and outdoor furniture. Drive with a spanner or socket on the hex head; no clearance hole is needed in the second timber piece.

How is a Coach Screw different from a Hex Bolt?
A coach screw cuts its own thread into timber. A hex bolt clamps two parts together with a nut.

Coach screws have a coarse single-start wood thread and a pointed tip. Hex bolts have a machine thread and a flat end designed to mate with a nut.

Do I need to pre-drill before installing a coach screw?
Yes. As a starting point, drill a pilot hole 2mm smaller than the coach screw size. If that doesn't work well, test with slightly smaller or larger hole sizes. A lot depends on the timber age and material.

All coach screws require a pilot hole before they are driven into the wood, regardless of timber type. The pilot hole prevents the screw from splitting the timber and reduces driving torque.

Can M6 (6mm) Galvanised Coach Screws be used outdoors?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanised carbon steel is the standard outdoor finish, including treated-timber contact.

Hot-dip galvanising is the standard finish for outdoor timber work, including direct contact with H3 and H4 treated pine. The thick (50 to 85 micron) zinc layer gives decades of corrosion protection in most rural and outdoor environments.

What standard are these manufactured to?
Manufactured to AS1393.

The standard defines the head dimensions, thread form, mechanical properties and material grade.

What spanner / driver size do I need?
Drive type: Hex. Spanner / socket size: 10mm.

Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.

Can I use this with treated pine?
Yes. Hot-dip galvanised is rated for direct contact with H3 and H4 treated pine.

Treated pine contains copper-based preservatives that attack zinc plating and uncoated carbon steel. Hot-dip galvanised has a thick sacrificial zinc layer that holds up against these preservatives. Never use plain or electroplated-zinc fasteners in treated-timber contact.

Material & Coating

Galvanised Hot-dip galvanised carbon steel. The standard outdoor finish; thick zinc coating gives decades of corrosion resistance. The right choice for trailer chassis, mast and pole mounting, structural pipe clamping and outdoor tank fittings.

Matching Finishes Always match the finish across the assembly. Hot-dip galvanising adds a much thicker coating than zinc plating, so a zinc-plated nut will not wind onto a galvanised bolt, and a galvanised nut on a zinc-plated bolt will be loose. Pair galvanised bolts with galvanised nuts and washers.

Important Performance in permanent coastal applications (within 300 metres of the sea) is reduced. Refer to AGA technical bulletins or contact us for the right grade for severe marine exposure.

Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.00mm apart.

How to Measure

Fastener Length This product has a head that sits on top of the material, so the length is measured from directly under the head to the tip of the thread. The head itself is not included in the size.

Thread Length On a coach screw the thread length runs from the start of the unthreaded section (called the shank) to the end of the thread. To view the thread length for this product, select a length above.
