M6 (6mm) x 1.00p Nyloc Insert Nuts are hex nuts with a nylon insert in the top that grips the bolt thread and resists loosening from vibration.

About Nyloc Insert Nuts

Nyloc Insert Nuts have a nylon ring at the top that grips the bolt thread once the nut is fully seated. The grip is friction-based, so the nut stays tight under vibration without a separate lock washer. Single-use is recommended. The nylon insert deforms on first install and loses bite on re-use.

Recommended use Indoor and dry-environment use only. Common in automotive, machinery and electrical assembly where the bolt is not exposed to weather, condensation or wet service.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a locking nut and why use one?
A nut with a built-in feature that resists loosening under vibration, so the joint stays tight without a separate lock washer.

Vibration is the main reason fasteners come loose. Locking nuts add a friction-locking element (a nylon insert, a deformed metal thread, or a tapered crown) that grips the bolt thread once the nut is fully seated. They are not a substitute for correct torque, but they protect against loss of preload from vibration over time.

How does the locking work?
A nylon insert in the top of the nut deforms around the bolt thread, creating friction that resists loosening.

On a Nyloc, the unthreaded nylon ring is forced down onto the bolt thread as the nut is tightened. The thread cuts into the nylon, which grips back. On all-metal styles, the locking action comes from a controlled distortion in the top threads that pinches the bolt thread when fully seated.

Can I re-use this nut?
Single use is recommended. The nylon insert deforms on first installation and loses grip on re-use.

Best practice: use a fresh Nyloc every time the joint is rebuilt. The locking torque drops noticeably after the first installation as the nylon takes a permanent set.

What bolt does this fit?
Any bolt with a matching M6 (6mm) x 1.00mm coarse thread pitch, of the same standard.

Match diameter and pitch exactly. The bolt's strength class should be equal to or lower than the nut's class. A higher-class nut on a lower-class bolt is safe; the reverse can strip the bolt before the nut yields.

What strength class is this?
Refer to the product title for the property class and the head marking for the grade.

See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table.

What standard is this manufactured to?
Manufactured to DIN 985.

Locking-nut standards specify the locking torque (the torque required to first run the nut down a bolt) as well as the usual dimensional and strength requirements.

What spanner / socket size do I need?
Spanner / socket size: 10mm.

Drive these with a matching spanner, socket or driver bit. Using an oversized tool will round off the head.

What temperature can a Nyloc nut handle?
Effective up to about 120 degrees C. Above that the nylon softens and the lock degrades.

Standard polyamide 6.6 insert is rated to about 120 C continuous, 150 C short-term. For higher temperatures use an all-metal locking nut (e.g. Conelock, Stover, K-Lock) which has no nylon and is rated to the same temperature as the steel itself.

Material & Coating

Zinc Electroplated zinc on carbon steel. A thin (5 to 12 micron) bright (clear-passivated) zinc layer applied by electrolysis. Bright silvery finish.

Important NOT suitable for outdoor, wet, marine or treated-timber applications. The thin coating is consumed quickly by rainwater or treated-pine preservatives. For outdoor use, specify hot-dip galvanised.

Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.00mm apart.

How to Measure

Measurements Accurate to the relevant standard and should be used as a guide only. They are either hand-measured or taken from suppliers' catalogues. We only stock Hobson for this product; substituting another brand is rare and would always be confirmed with you first.

Still not sure? See our step-by-step identification guide for help measuring your fastener.
