About Cross Dowel Barrel Nuts
Cross Dowel Nuts are slotted cylindrical nuts used in knock-down furniture and joinery. The nut sits in a perpendicular hole in one workpiece while a bolt passes through the mating piece into the cross-thread, clamping the two together. The screwdriver slot on the end face lets you rotate the nut so the thread aligns with the incoming bolt.
Recommended use Indoor and dry-environment use only. Common in automotive, machinery and electrical assembly where the bolt is not exposed to weather, condensation or wet service.
Find the spanner that fits it snugly, then measure the hole. Our nut identification chart lists every metric and imperial nut we stock side by side, sorted by spanner size.
The fastest check is the male thread: the right nut spins onto its bolt by hand with no force. Identify the bolt size and pitch first with our bolt and screw guide, and the nut follows.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common in JCB-style barrel connectors: one piece of furniture has a vertical bolt hole, the mating piece has a horizontal hole for the barrel nut. The bolt threads into the barrel, clamping the two pieces together.
Hole size and panel-thickness range are encoded in the product name. Match these before installing. Too tight a hole and the nut won't seat; too loose and the nut won't grip the workpiece.
The bolt must match the nut's diameter and pitch. Choose a length that fully engages the nut's thread depth: at least one nut height of engagement, the same rule as for any standard nut joint.
See the head marking chart and full strength table on our site for the full conversion table and head markings.
Insert nuts are often built to a manufacturer specification rather than a public standard, particularly for cage nuts (panel-rack industry) and timber inserts (joinery industry).
One workpiece carries a vertical bolt hole, the mating piece has a horizontal hole for the cylindrical nut. The bolt threads through the joint into the cross-thread.
Material & Coating
Zinc Electroplated zinc on carbon steel. A thin (5 to 12 micron) bright (clear-passivated) zinc layer applied by electrolysis. Bright silvery finish.
Important NOT suitable for outdoor, wet, marine or treated-timber applications. The thin coating is consumed quickly by rainwater or treated-pine preservatives. For outdoor use, specify hot-dip galvanised.
Class Metric fasteners are classified as class 2, 4.6, 8.8, 10.9, 12.9, 14.9. See the head marking chart and full strength table.
Thread Pitch & Terminology
Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.00mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.00mm apart.
How to Measure
Sizing Cross dowel nuts are sized by barrel diameter, barrel length and thread. The barrel diameter must match the hole drilled across the joint (a 10mm barrel needs a 10mm hole), the barrel should sit fully inside the timber, and the thread takes the connector bolt. The slot in the end lets you line up the thread hole with a screwdriver.
