About Rubber Nuts

Rubber Nuts are a different kind of nutsert: an elastomer body with an internal brass thread, installed by tightening a bolt. The rubber compresses radially against the panel and clamps the assembly while providing a watertight seal and vibration damping. Used in marine, automotive, HVAC, and electrical enclosures where a metal nutsert would let water through or transmit vibration. Lower load capacity than metal: choose for sealing and damping rather than high clamp force.

What is a Rubber Nutsert and how is it different from a metal one?
A blind-installed threaded fastener with a rubber body and an internal brass thread, installed by tightening a bolt rather than crushing with a nutsert tool. Provides a watertight seal and vibration damping that a metal nutsert can't.

Where a metal nutsert relies on a nutsert tool to deform the body and clamp behind the panel, a rubber nutsert relies on tightening a bolt to compress the rubber radially. As the bolt is tightened, the rubber bulges out against the back of the panel and seals the hole. The compromise: lower clamp strength than metal, but full sealing and damping.

How is a Rubber Nutsert installed?
Unlike metal nutserts, no specialist nutsert tool is needed. Drill the recommended hole size, push the rubber nutsert in, fit a washer and bolt through, then tighten the bolt with a standard spanner or socket. The rubber compresses radially and clamps behind the panel.

The bolt itself does the install - that simplicity is a big part of the appeal of rubber over metal. The brass internal thread carries the bolt load; the rubber carries the seal and vibration damping. Keep tightening until the assembly is firm and the rubber has visibly bulged behind the panel. Overtightening will spin the brass insert in the rubber, so back off the moment the assembly is snug. Does it provide a watertight seal?
Yes. The rubber body compresses against the panel and around the bolt shank, forming a continuous seal that excludes water and dust.

This is the main reason to choose rubber over metal: anywhere a metal nutsert would let water through the panel (marine, automotive, HVAC, outdoor electrical enclosures) the rubber nutsert seals the hole as part of the installation.

How do I know what grip range I need?
Match the grip range printed in the product name to the actual thickness of the panel you're installing into.

The grip range for this rubber nutsert is 8.50 - 15.00mm, which is the panel-thickness window the rubber will clamp on. Outside the rated grip range the rubber won't seal or won't compress correctly.

What hole size do I need?
Drill a 8.00mm hole for this rubber nutsert. Hole size is product-specific and depends on body diameter and grip range. Confirm against the product specifications table above before drilling.

Typical rubber nutsert hole sizes are larger than equivalent metal nutsert holes because the rubber body is thicker. Always check the manufacturer's hole-size table for the exact dimension.

What bolt does this take?
Any bolt with a matching M4 (4mm) x 0.70mm coarse thread pitch. Choose a stainless bolt for outdoor / marine to match the rubber's environmental rating.

Bolt length should engage the brass insert without bottoming out. Stainless bolts pair well with rubber nutserts in marine and outdoor environments: the rubber is already waterproof, the stainless bolt completes the corrosion package.

Where are Rubber Nutserts typically used?

Don't use for structural fastening. The rubber will creep under load over time and the joint will loosen. For sealed but load-bearing penetrations, combine a metal nutsert with a separate gasket or use a sealing nutsert.


Material & Coating

Rubber An elastomer (rubber) body bonded around an internal brass thread. The two materials work together: the brass thread carries the bolt load and stays dimensionally stable, while the rubber body compresses radially against the panel to form a watertight seal and absorb vibration.

Important Not for structural fastening. The rubber will creep under sustained load, so the joint loosens over time. For sealed but load-bearing penetrations, use a metal nutsert with a separate gasket, or a purpose-built sealing nutsert.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Every nutsert we stock is metric coarse - the default series that matches standard metric bolts and machine screws. This product has a 0.70mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 0.70mm apart.

How is the Length of a Nutsert Measured?

Nutsert Length Every nutsert is measured the same way: overall, head included - from the top of the head to the end of the body. The rule holds for every head style we stock, whether it is a large flange, small flange or countersunk head.
