What is Allthread (Threaded Rod) and what is it used for?

Continuous-thread metric rod, sold by length and cut to size on site.

Used for hanging supports, anchor sets, U-bolts, structural connections and any application that needs a custom-length threaded fastener.

How do I cut threaded rod to length?

Cut with a hacksaw, abrasive cut-off wheel or band saw.

Run a nut onto the rod above the cut line first; cutting will leave a burr that fouls a fresh nut. After cutting, file or grind the cut end square and unscrew the nut back off. The nut clears the burr from the threads as it comes off, so a clean nut runs on without binding.

What strength class is this?

Stainless A4-70 G316. Property class 70 (700 MPa minimum tensile).

What standard is this manufactured to?

Manufactured to DIN 975.

DIN 975 is the international standard for metric continuous-thread rod. It specifies the diameter, thread pitch, straightness and the tolerance grade. The standard does not specify a strength class; that is set per product based on the class or grade shown in the product title.

What hex nut do I need?

A matching diameter AND pitch nut: M12 (12mm) x 1.75.

Diameter and pitch must both match. A M12 (12mm) x 1.75 coarse rod will NOT accept a nut with a different pitch, even though the diameter is the same. The nut's strength class should equal or exceed the rod's class.

How much thread engagement do I need into a nut?

Rule of thumb: at least one full diameter of engagement for full strength.

For a M12 (12mm) rod, full strength is reached at about one diameter of thread engagement into the nut (roughly the same number of millimetres as the size, so a M12 (12mm) rod needs about that many mm of engagement). For high-load or safety-critical joints, increase to 1.5 x diameter. Always leave at least three full threads protruding past the nut so a vibration loss of one or two threads leaves the joint intact.

Will the thread gall when I tighten a stainless nut on stainless rod?

Yes. Stainless on stainless tends to gall. Use an anti-seize compound and tighten slowly.

Galling is the cold-welding of two stainless surfaces under load. Once it starts the nut seizes on the rod and will not back off without cutting. To avoid it: apply a nickel- or copper-based anti-seize to the threads before assembly, use a torque wrench rather than rattling the nut on with an impact, and stop tightening immediately if the nut starts to feel hot or rough.

Where is metric Allthread typically used?

Hanging supports for pipework and cable trays, anchor sets cast into concrete, U-bolts, light structural connections, and any custom-length bolt-up.

Threaded rod is the go-to whenever you need a custom-length bolt and want to specify your own nut, washer and engagement. Cut to length, fit nuts and washers either end, done.

Material & Coating

Stainless A4-70 G316 Austenitic stainless steel. Property class 70 designates a minimum tensile strength of 700 MPa with a 0.2 percent proof stress of 450 MPa. Lightly magnetic in cold-worked form, which does not affect corrosion performance.

Grade selection A2-70 G304 is the general-purpose stainless grade for outdoor and most chemical environments. A4-70 G316 contains 2 to 3 percent molybdenum, giving substantially better resistance to chlorides; A4-70 G316 is the preferred grade for marine, coastal and pool environments.

Important Do not pair stainless fasteners with plain or galvanised steel components in wet service. The galvanic potential difference accelerates corrosion of the less-noble metal.

Class Stainless fasteners are classified by property class: A2-35 / A2-50 / A2-70 in G304 stainless, and A4-40 / A4-70 / A4-80 (Bumax 88) in G316. The first digit indicates the alloy and the second is the minimum tensile strength in 100 MPa increments (e.g. A4-70 = 700 MPa). See the head marking chart and full strength table.

Thread Pitch & Terminology

Thread Pitch (Metric) Metric fasteners measure thread pitch as the distance between thread peaks, expressed in millimetres. Metric also branches into three series: coarse (the default; widest tolerance, easiest to tap), fine (a tighter pitch for higher clamp load or thinner walls), and extra fine (the tightest pitch, used for thin-wall tube, precision instruments, and aerospace fittings where vibration loosening must be minimised). Always match the series as well as the size - a metric fine nut will not engage a metric coarse bolt of the same diameter, and an extra fine nut will not engage either. This product has a 1.75mm coarse pitch, meaning the peaks are 1.75mm apart.
