About Square Bits
Square driver bits (SQ0, SQ1, SQ2, SQ3) engage the Robertson square-drive recess on timber decking screws, treated-pine assembly screws and many heavy-duty self-tappers. Robertson transfers torque across four large flat surfaces with minimal cam-out - the preferred drive for cordless impact work on long timber screws.
Frequently Asked Questions
Robertson was patented in 1908 in Canada and remains the dominant timber-screw drive across North America. In Australia it's standard on decking screws, treated-pine batten screws and structural timber screws. Cam-out resistance under cordless-impact use is excellent.
SQ0 fits small fasteners (#6 screws); SQ1 fits #8 / #10 timber screws; SQ2 fits #10 to #12 decking and batten screws (the most-stocked size); SQ3 fits #14 and larger structural timber. Match the bit number to the recess - SQ1 in an SQ2 recess will round out the corners.
Decking and treated-timber screws need high install torque (the wood is dense, often pre-treated, often wet on install). Phillips would cam out. Pozi and Torx work too but Square is the industry default - matches the existing screw inventory on most Australian sites.
Use impact-rated (black-oxide) bits in impact drivers. Bright-finish bits will snap at the chuck end after 50 to 200 impact blows even though the Square tip is undamaged.
Match the SQ number on the bit to the SQ number on the screw head. SQ2 covers the vast majority of #10 / #12 decking and treated-timber screws.
How to Measure
Sizing Square (Robertson) bits are sized SQ0, SQ1, SQ2, SQ3 by the square-recess corner-to-corner dimension. SQ2 is the most-stocked size, fitting #10/#12 decking and treated-pine screws. The geometry resists cam-out at high torque.
How to measure a driver bit Pick the bit by the square size number (SQ0 through SQ3). The shank is the bit's clamping end - 1/4" hex is the universal standard across cordless drivers, impact drivers and bit holders. The overall length determines reach: 25mm insert for general use, 50mm to 90mm power bits with a torsion zone for impact drivers, 116mm for Hilti autofeed, long-shank Allen keys for recessed socket cap screws. Cross-check the tip dimension against the screw head before driving - an undersized bit cams out and strips the recess.
Measurements Accurate to the relevant standard and should be used as a guide only. They are either hand-measured or taken from suppliers' catalogues. We only stock Hobson for this product; substituting another brand is rare and would always be confirmed with you first.
Magnetism
This product is magnetised. The tip / cup retains a fastener through alignment and engagement, which speeds work in overhead, awkward or one-handed install scenarios. Across the wider Driving range, magnetised bits, holders and nutsetters speed install by holding the fastener on the tip through alignment; non-magnetised tools are preferred for electronics, magnetic-sensor proximity and any work where stray magnetism on the fastener would cause downstream issues. Check the specification table above for the per-SKU value before ordering for magnetism-sensitive applications.
