About Torx Bits

Torx driver bits engage the six-point star recess on Torx fasteners. Torx is the highest-torque cross-recess in common use - the lobes transfer load perpendicular to the bit centreline, giving about 30 percent higher torque capacity than Phillips at the same tip size. Standard on automotive, electronic and high-spec self-tapping screws.

How to Measure

Sizing Torx bits are sized by Torx T-number (T8, T10, T15, T20, T25, T27, T30, T40, T45). The T-number references ISO 10664 and is NOT a millimetre dimension. T15 fits #6/#8 self-tappers; T20 fits #10/M5; T25 fits #12/M6; T30 fits M8.

How to measure a driver bit Pick the bit by the Torx T-number (T8 through T45) stamped on the bit shank. The shank is the bit's clamping end - 1/4" hex is the universal standard across cordless drivers, impact drivers and bit holders. The overall length determines reach: 25mm insert for general use, 50mm to 90mm power bits with a torsion zone for impact drivers, 116mm for Hilti autofeed, long-shank Allen keys for recessed socket cap screws. Cross-check the tip dimension against the screw head before driving - an undersized bit cams out and strips the recess.
