Coach Screws

Compare your fastener to our visual size guide to confirm size, pitch and length.
Match your spanner / socket AF (across-flats) to the size it fits - our reference chart covers every metric and imperial size we stock.
Coach screws are heavy-duty wood screws with a hexagon head — driven straight into timber with a spanner or socket without a nut at the back. The hex head gives much more driving torque than a slotted or Phillips screw can take, which is why coach screws are used for structural timber work, pergolas, decking ledger boards and heavy fencing.
They thread directly into the timber, so a pilot hole is essential — too small and the screw seizes or the head shears off, too large and the thread strips. Refer to our pilot hole chart for the correct drill size against species and screw diameter.
MATERIALS AND FINISHES
Galvanised — Class 4.6 hot-dip galvanised, the standard finish for outdoor and treated-pine timber.
A4-70 G316 Marine Grade Stainless — For coastal decks, marine work, and anywhere galvanising won't last.
GRADES STOCKED
Class 4.6 Galvanised — Economical structural-timber coach screw.
A4-70 G316 Stainless — Marine corrosion resistance.
Sizes: M6, M8, M10, M12 and M16 — M10 and M12 are the busiest.
Thread system: Metric Coarse.
Standards: AS1393 (galvanised), DIN 571 (stainless).
Most coach screws are hex head; we also stock a small range of countersunk-head coach screws (DIN 571 with HEC marking) for flush-fit work. Always pre-drill — see our Technical PDF's Library for pilot hole sizing.
