Countersunk Timber Screws

Countersunk Timber Screws are one-piece self-threading screws with a tapered head designed to sit flush with the timber surface after install. The complement to the demountable connectors above - used for the fixed, permanent timber-to-timber joints that sit between the demountable assembly points (carcase backs, drawer bottoms, fixed shelf cleats, plinth fixings). The tapered head wedges into a matching countersunk hole so the surface stays flat for painting, papering, or further hardware.

Also known as: Countersunk timber screw, CSK timber screw, flush-head timber screw, countersunk wood screw, flat-head timber screw, CSK self-tapper.

Coarse self-threading thread (not a metric machine thread). The screw cuts its own thread in the timber as it drives - no pre-tapped hole needed, just a pilot drill in hardwoods to relieve the splitting force from the tapered head. Sized by gauge (8g, 10g, 12g) and length (mm).

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Zinc Plated Steel - the standard interior finish. Suitable for indoor cabinetry, fixed shelf cleats, carcase backs.

Stainless Steel A2-70 G304 - exterior, marine, or wet-service use. Outdoor furniture, bathroom carcases, boat fit-outs.

Stainless Steel A4-70 G316 - extreme marine / coastal exposure (within 300m of the coast, salt-air constant). Higher chromium and molybdenum than A2-70.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Standard drives are Phillips PH2, Pozi PZ2, or Square Drive #2 depending on the screw size and supplier. Cordless impact drivers handle most installations.

In hardwood, drill a pilot hole 2mm smaller than the screw shank diameter and countersink the top to match the head angle. In softwood and MDF, a pilot is optional but still recommended for accuracy. Drive the screw until the head sits flush with the surface - past flush and the head will sink and tear the timber fibres.

If you are filling and painting over the screw head, set it 1-2mm below the surface so there is room for filler. If the head is staying visible, drive it to flush only.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Countersunk timber screws are the workhorses of fixed timber assembly:

Carcase backs and bottoms - permanent fixings on the parts that won't be disassembled. Heads sit flush so the panel can be papered or veneered over.
Drawer bottoms - thin plywood or hardboard fixed to drawer frames with countersunk screws. Flush heads don't catch on drawer contents.
Fixed shelf cleats - the timber strips that support fixed shelves inside a carcase. CSK screws into the gable, flush so they don't interfere with the shelf above.
Plinth and kick-board fixings - timber plinths screwed to base cabinets. Flush heads can be filled and painted to match.
Cabinet face frames - face frames screwed and glued to carcase edges; CSK screws are filled and the frame is finished over.
Outdoor furniture and garden joinery - stainless CSK screws hold up to weather without staining the timber around the head.
