How to measure washers
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know.
1If you know your bolt size

Washers are named by the bolt they fit: an M10 washer suits an M10 bolt. The inside diameter is slightly larger than the bolt so it slides on. Our guide covers every size and washer type we stock.

2If you have a washer in hand

Measure the inside diameter (ID), outside diameter (OD) and thickness, as shown in the drawing.

EXTERNAL vs INTERNAL

External Tooth — Teeth on the outside of the washer. The teeth are on a larger radius, giving greater twisting resistance, which is preferred when high locking torque is needed. Suitable for use under large heads (button, pan, round, hex flange).

Internal Tooth — Teeth on the inside of the washer. Best where appearance matters — the teeth hide under the fastener head. Use under smaller fastener heads or in clearance-critical applications.

Countersunk Serrated — Countersunk-shaped tooth washer for use with countersunk and oval-head screws — see our dedicated page for these.

MATERIALS

A2-70 G304 Stainless Steel — General outdoor and indoor use.

A4-70 G316 Marine Grade Stainless — Coastal and food/chemical use. Largely non-magnetic.

Mild Steel Zinc Plated — Economical, protected outdoor and indoor applications.

A NOTE ON FASTENER HEAD CONTACT

For tooth lock washers to do their job, the teeth must make contact with both surfaces. With a small head (e.g., cap head socket screw) the washer OD may exceed the head, so the teeth only bite into the mating surface — locking effectiveness is reduced. In those cases, an internal tooth washer or a Schnorr® / Nord-Lock® is a better choice.

Tooth lock washers use radial teeth to bite into the mating surface and the underside of the fastener head, creating mechanical resistance to rotation. The teeth are stamped at an angle so tightening forces them flat — once they bite, the joint resists loosening from vibration much better than a simple spring washer.
