1If you have a screw in hand

Measure across the outside of the thread - not the shank - to get the gauge (an 8g screw measures about 4.2mm). Screw gauges have a wider tolerance than bolts, so treat it as a close match rather than exact. Then measure the length - countersunk timber screws are measured overall, head included.

Hex flange timber screws fasten sheet cladding (Colorbond, Trimdek, BlueScope sheet) into timber wall stud, framing or batten. The hex flange head clamps the cladding firmly to the timber framing without head pull-through; the Needle Point tip pushes cleanly through thin sheet and timber framing without splitting the timber substrate.

Also known as: Hex Head Timber Screw, Stitching Screw, 1/4 AF Hex Screw, Sheet-to-Timber Screw, Needle Point Stitching Screw.

8g (4.20mm) and 10g shanks in coarse self-drilling thread, lengths 12mm through 30mm covering cladding plus timber framing engagement. 1/4 hex AF drive. Galvanised Class 4 finish. Used in conjunction with the timber framing pictured behind sheet cladding.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Zinc Yellow (Class 2): zinc plate with a yellow chromate passivation - interior and dry, sheltered work. Galvanised (Class 3, 4, B8 and X9): galvanised finishes for exterior and structural work and treated-pine exposure - the higher the class, the harsher the environment it suits. Higher Classes and painted variants available.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Drive with a 1/4 inch hex socket at 1500-2500 RPM. Set the driver torque so the head seats against the cladding face firmly enough to compress the cladding to the timber framing without distorting the sheet. The Needle Point tip handles cladding sheet plus timber stud in one continuous drive.

SIZE AND THREAD

8g for light cladding stitch work; 10g for thicker cladding sheet plus heavier timber stud. Lengths 12mm-30mm. The full length covers the sheet thickness plus the timber engagement (typically 8-15mm into the timber stud).
