Jobber Drill Bits

Jobber Drill Bits

Jobber Drill Bits (also known as HSS Jobber Bit, Twist Drill Bit, Cobalt Jobber Bit or General-Purpose Drill Bit) are the everyday workhorse twist drill for metal, alloy and timber. BNA stocks 217+ of these ex stock from our Brisbane warehouse, covering the full range of diameters, lengths and shank styles that engineers, tradies, manufacturers and DIY users need for everyday drilling tasks. Same-day dispatch on online orders placed before 1pm.

Also known as: HSS Jobber Bit, Twist Drill Bit, Cobalt Jobber Bit, General-Purpose Drill Bit.

Drill Bit Construction & Materials

Alpha Gold Series HSS M2 (1.3343) high-speed steel, 800-900 HV hardness, the standard for general steel, brass, aluminium, alloy and timber. Self-coloured finish, 135-degree split point. Holds up to operating temperatures around 600 degrees C.

Alpha HSS Cobalt M35 5% cobalt added to the steel matrix. Operating temperature lifts to ~700 degrees C, so the cutting edge survives stainless and hardened workpieces where standard HSS would anneal in minutes. Darker tempered colour. Costs more, lasts much longer in stainless.

Alpha Inox Stainless Specific Optimised geometry and edge prep for stainless and exotic alloys. Identifiable by the Alpha Inox marking on the shank. The default choice for production runs in 304, 316, duplex and Inconel.

Drive & Use

Standard twist drill geometry: 135-degree split point self-centres on a flat surface without a punch-mark, helical flutes clear chips through any panel thickness up to roughly the flute depth.

Bench drills, cordless drivers, impact drivers and drill presses all accept these. Match the chuck to the shank diameter and tighten on the shank (not the flute) for full grip.

For metal drilling, run slower for bigger bits: 1mm-3mm at 2000-3000 RPM, 4mm-8mm at 1000-2000 RPM, 10mm-13mm at 500-1000 RPM, over 13mm under 500 RPM. Cutting fluid keeps the edge cool in steel and stainless. Aluminium drills clean with WD-40 or dry. Cast iron drills dry. Stainless requires fluid.

Pilot hole sizing: drill a 25-50% pilot before any hole over 8mm. A 13mm hole starts with a 6mm pilot. Without one, the chisel edge grinds rather than cuts, the bit walks, and the tip burns.

Sizing & Measurements

Diameter range 1mm-25mm metric, 1/64" - 1/2" imperial, plus number (#1-#80) and letter (A-Z) sizes

Length range Standard jobber length: 24mm to 290mm overall depending on diameter. Flute length is approximately 9x the diameter, which is the international jobber convention.

Shank Plain round shank that fits any standard drill chuck. 13mm shanks for the larger sizes mean the same chuck handles the whole range.

Metric sizes step in 0.5mm increments through 13mm, then 0.5mm or 1mm to 25mm. Imperial sizes step in 1/64-inch through 1/2 inch, then 1/32 or 1/16-inch above. Number and letter drill sizes fill the gaps between metric and imperial in 0.05mm intervals.

For a metric bolt clearance hole, drill the bolt diameter plus 0.5mm-1mm (so M10 = 10.5mm-11mm drill). For a tapped hole, drill the standard tapping size for the thread (M10 coarse = 8.5mm).

Jobber LENGTH refers to the standard 9-times-diameter flute length. For deeper holes, step up to the Long Series range. For shorter, more rigid drilling, screw machine length bits (not currently stocked) are the next category down.
