R Clip Humpback Pins

R-clip humpback pins (also called hairpin cotters) are a bent-wire quick-release pin: the straight leg passes through a cross-hole and the bent arm provides the spring force that locks the pin against back-out. Lighter and lower-cost than a linch pin, with the same tool-free install / remove convenience. Used for hitch pins on towed equipment, retention pins on machinery shaft ends, cross-pin retention on linkages.

R-clip humpback pins are not threaded. The pin diameter label is the wire diameter (typically 1.2mm to 1.6mm). The bent arm sits clear of the work face and acts as the spring + operator grip. Distinct from linch pins, which use a hinged ring instead of a bent arm. Distinct from cotter split pins (DIN 94), which have two folded legs instead of one straight leg and one bent arm.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Zinc Silver Plated Spring Steel - the standard R-clip material. Spring temper to maintain the locking force across multiple install cycles. Zinc plating provides modest corrosion protection suitable for general workshop, agricultural and automotive use. For prolonged outdoor, coastal or marine exposure, specify a stainless linch pin (DIN 6799) instead - stainless R-clips are not stocked in this size range.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Push the straight leg through the cross-hole until the bend seats against the work face. The bent arm will deflect as it passes around the work and snap into its locked position. To remove: pull the bent arm back away from the leg and withdraw the pin. No tools required.

The host hole must be sized to clear the wire diameter without excessive play. Like all spring-locking quick-release pins, R-clips are designed for repeated cycles - expect to install and remove them many times over the equipment's life.

A NOTE ON GALLING

R-clips are not subject to galling - the wire material and zinc plating drive cleanly against typical steel host material. Galling is a stainless-on-stainless concern; zinc-plated R-clips on a steel host don't trigger it.

LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS

R-clip humpback pins are measured by the straight leg length that passes through the host hole. Match the leg length to the host material thickness plus enough clearance for the bent arm to fully engage without binding.
