Taps

Taps

Taps cut internal threads in drilled holes. The Sutton Tools and Alpha tap range covers metric coarse, metric fine, UNC, UNF, BSW and BSF series in sizes M2.5 through M30 (and equivalent imperial), in three cutting forms - spiral point gun taps for through-hole production, spiral flute taps for blind-hole chip evacuation, and straight flute taps for hand tapping and general-purpose workshop use.

Also known as: Gun Tap, Machine Tap, Hand Tap, Spiral Point Tap, Spiral Flute Tap, Straight Flute Tap, Bottoming Tap, Taper Tap, Plug Tap, Sutton Tap, Alpha Tap, HSSE Tap, M35 Tap.

Taps are ground from HSS (high-speed steel) or HSSE (HSS with 5% cobalt, also called M35). HSSE holds a cutting edge longer in stainless and tougher alloys. The 600+ SKU range here is stocked specifically to cover the workshop and production tapping needs that turn up most often in Australian fabrication, marine, mining and general manufacturing.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

HSS: High-speed steel - the standard for hand taps and general-purpose machine taps in mild steel, brass and aluminium. Holds edge through several hundred cycles in mild steel. The Alpha straight-flute tap range is HSS.

HSSE (M35): HSS with 5% cobalt, raising heat resistance and edge hardness. Required for repeated tapping in stainless, alloy steel and tough castings. The Sutton spiral-point gun-tap range and most production grades use HSSE. The cobalt also improves wear at higher cutting speeds.

Surface treatments: Some taps are supplied bright (no coating), others nitrided or steam-tempered (slight black/blue oxide for chip-flow improvement and corrosion protection in storage). Coating choice doesn't change cutting performance materially - it's primarily a wear and storage consideration.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Hand taps drive with a tap wrench - the operator turns one to two cycles forward, then reverses a half-turn to break chips. Spiral point gun taps drive from a drill press or CNC head with constant cutting fluid. Spiral flute taps drive the same way but with deeper cut depth and slower spindle speed. Always confirm pilot hole size before starting - tap drill = nominal diameter minus pitch (M8 x 1.25p = 6.75mm pilot).

THREAD LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS

Tap length is fixed by ISO 529 dimensions for hand and machine taps - M3 through M12 are typically 60-65mm overall length, M16+ are 90mm+ overall. The cutting length depends on the tap form: taper taps have a longer chamfer (3-5 lead threads), plug taps have a medium chamfer (3 lead threads), bottoming taps have a short chamfer (1-2 lead threads) for cutting into the bottom of a blind hole. The renderer auto-emits the per-SKU length and chamfer info.
