Die Nuts

Die nuts are hex-shaped thread cutters used to chase damaged external threads back to clean engagement, or to cut a fresh short thread on round bar. The hex form lets the die nut drive with a standard spanner - no die stock required. Run a die nut down a rusted, paint-affected or burred bolt thread and the cutting edges remove the corrosion and restore the original thread profile without removing the underlying metal.

The Alpha carbon-steel die-nut range covers metric coarse M3 through M30, metric fine M6 through M30, plus UNC, UNF and BSW imperial. Each die nut is single-size, single-pitch - an M10 x 1.5p coarse die nut won't chase an M10 x 1.25p fine thread, and vice versa.
GRADES AND MATERIALS
Carbon Steel: Standard die-nut material. The cutting torque to chase an existing thread is much lower than cutting a fresh thread, so the higher cost of HSS or HSSE isn't justified for this tool form. Carbon steel die nuts last for hundreds of chasing cycles before the cutting edges round off.
The die-nut body is hex-formed to standard wrench sizes - M10 die nut takes a 17mm AF spanner, M12 takes 19mm, M16 takes 24mm, matching the AF dimensions of standard hex nuts. The wrench AF is published per SKU.
DRIVE AND INSTALLATION
Set the die nut onto the damaged thread end square to the bolt axis. Start by hand turning - the die nut should engage immediately if the thread size and pitch are correct. Apply cutting fluid (general tapping oil for steel, WD-40 for aluminium). Drive with a standard ring or open-ended spanner, one to two turns forward, half-turn reverse to break chips. The chasing action removes corrosion, paint or burrs - if material is being cut away, the die nut is the wrong size or pitch for the original thread.
A NOTE ON GALLING
Carbon die nuts don't gall against standard carbon-steel or plated bolts. When chasing a stainless thread, apply cutting oil to the die nut and run slowly - stainless work-hardens under friction and excessive chasing speed can pick up the cutter face.
THREAD LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS
Die nut thickness equals 1 to 1.5 times the thread pitch - enough to cut a short clean thread on plain round bar. For longer fresh threads (5+ diameters), use a split die in a die stock instead. The renderer auto-emits the wrench AF and exact thickness per SKU.
