Dowel Pins

Dowel pins are precision-ground parallel pins used to locate machined parts at repeatable positions. The pin sits in a reamed interference-fit hole and provides a rigid shear-load location independent of the bolts that clamp the assembly. Used in punch and die sets, jig and fixture work, motor mounting, gearbox case-to-cover alignment, and any application where mating parts must return to the same relative position every time.
Also known as: Parallel Pins, Locating Pins, Reamed Pins, Precision Dowels, Cylindrical Pins.
Dowel pins are plain-cylinder pins with no thread, no head, no chamfer offset. The specified diameter is the pin's precision-ground OD. The pin's job is to LOCATE, not to clamp - the bolts in the assembly handle the clamping force. Length is measured end-to-end.
GRADES AND MATERIALS
Hardened Alloy Steel, Plain Uncoated (DIN 6325) - the precision standard. Through-hardened to Rockwell 58-62 HRC for wear resistance in repeated press / withdraw cycles in die sets and fixtures. Plain uncoated finish keeps the OD precisely to tolerance - any plating would build dimension and disturb the interference fit. Protect from corrosion during storage; light oil is appropriate for long-term workshop hold.
Stainless A2-70 G304 (DIN 7) - corrosion-resistant variant for food-grade, marine, washdown or chemical environments. Not as hard as DIN 6325 alloy steel; suited to locating duty rather than high-cycle wear. Largely non-magnetic in the annealed condition.
DRIVE AND INSTALLATION
Host holes are typically reamed (not just drilled) to give the precise diameter the interference fit needs. The hole must be square and parallel - any taper or bell-mouth and the pin won't seat properly. Drive with a flat-face soft hammer (brass, copper or hide), squarely down the pin axis. Never drive at an angle.
If the pin won't enter cleanly, the host hole is under-reamed - re-ream to the specified clearance. For longer pins, use a dowel-pin punch with a recess that captures the OD and applies force only to the end face. To remove: drive through with a parallel pin punch from the opposite side, or use a dowel-pin puller for blind-hole installations.
A NOTE ON GALLING
Stainless DIN 7 dowel pins driven into stainless host holes are subject to galling - cold-welding of the contact surfaces under interference-fit load. Install with a light anti-seize lubricant (food-grade if required), drive with steady force at moderate speed, avoid hammering at an angle. Plain-uncoated DIN 6325 hardened pins in carbon-steel host holes are not subject to galling.
LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS
Dowel pins are measured end-to-end (no head, no chamfer offset). Match the length to the combined depth of the two mating holes, leaving clearance at the blind end so the pin can be driven home without hydraulic-locking against trapped air or lubricant. As a working rule, length equals slightly less than the combined hole depth, allowing 0.5mm to 1mm clearance at the blind end.
