ONSITE+ Impact Step Tip Drill Bits

ONSITE+ Impact Step Tip Drill Bits (also known as Self-Centring Drill Bit, Step Point Drill Bit or ONSITE+ Drill Bit) are impact-rated drill bits with a self-centring step-tip geometry that drills without a punch-mark and survives percussive torque without snapping. Drill Bit Construction & Materials

Toughened HSS Body High-grade HSS heat-treated to a higher toughness rating than standard jobber bits. This is what survives the impact-driver percussion at the chuck shoulder — standard drills snap there under repeated hammer blows.

Step-Tip Cutting Geometry The tip is a tiny pre-pilot built into the bit: a 2-3mm long, smaller-diameter step at the very front. The bit bites and holds first time, every time, even on hardened or curved surfaces.

Black Oxide / TiN Surface Treatment Surface treatment reduces friction between bit and workpiece, extending edge life under impact-driver speeds. Distinct from standard chrome-finished jobbers.

Drive & Use

These bits are designed for impact drivers. Standard cordless drill drivers work fine too — they just shine under impact. The impact-rated shank means no broken bits at the chuck.

No punch-mark required. The step-tip bites and self-centres on a flat surface. Saves the time of marking, centre-punching and starting carefully. Especially valuable in awkward overhead or angled positions where centre-punching is difficult.

Technique: position the tip, pull the trigger, let the drill do the work. No need for the heavy pressure a standard twist drill needs to start. Run at moderate to slow speed — impact mode is louder than necessary at high RPM.

Drills steel, stainless, aluminium, timber and most plastics. Not for masonry (carbide tip required) or hardened tool steel (HSS Cobalt recommended instead).

Sharpening: the step-tip geometry needs CNC grinding to restore. Hand-sharpening destroys the self-centring action. Treat them as consumables and replace when the tip wears to a flat.

Sizing & Measurements

Diameter range 3mm to 13mm metric, plus imperial fractional from 1/8" to 1/2". Steps every 1mm in the metric range.

Length range Standard impact length 70mm-150mm depending on diameter. Shorter than equivalent jobber bits — designed for site work where bit excess length adds flex.

Shank 1/4-inch hex shank with a precision-machined detent groove. Locks into impact driver and quick-change holders without slipping. Survives percussive torque without snapping at the shoulder.

Use these wherever you'd otherwise punch-mark a standard jobber. Sheet metal, vehicle bodywork, electrical cabinets, overhead steel framing.

1mm increments through 13mm cover every common bolt clearance hole. M8 clearance = 9mm step-tip bit. M10 clearance = 11mm. M12 clearance = 13mm (which sits at the top of the range).

For diameters above 13mm on site, switch to a Reduced Shank bit (in a drill driver, not an impact) or a step cutter / step drill.
