Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know.

1If you have a screw in hand

Measure across the outside of the thread - not the shank - to get the gauge (a 10g decking screw measures about 4.8mm). Screw gauges have a wider tolerance than bolts, so treat it as a close match rather than exact. Then measure the overall length, head included - decking screws are countersunk.

Decking Installation Tools

Everything you need to lay a deck, not just the driver bits. In dense hardwoods like merbau and spotted gum a decking screw will not drive without a pilot hole, so the job starts with a countersink pilot drill. From there you need the right driver bits to seat the screws, deck-board spacers to keep the gaps even, magnetic bit holders for overhead and subframe work, and hidden-fastener tools for clip-and-rail systems.

Range

Countersink pilot drills combine a high-speed fluted drill bit, a countersink cutter and a free-spinning depth-stop collar, so every hole gets the same pilot and the same countersink depth without marking the board. Sized to the screw by gauge (8g to 14g) and head style (standard or trim head), with an anti-clog cut that stays visible as you work.

Driver bits in Square SQ2, Torx T20 and T25, and Pozi PZ2, in 50mm, 75mm, 125mm and 150mm shank lengths. Magnetic bit holders with a 1/4" hex shank. Deck-board spacers in 3mm, 5mm and 7mm to set the board gap consistently across a run. Hidden-fastener installation tools for clip-and-rail decking systems.

Recommended Use

Pre-drill first in hardwood. Merbau, spotted gum and other dense boards split or stop the screw if you drive straight in. The countersink pilot drill bores the pilot hole and cuts the countersink recess in one pass, so the screw head finishes flush or just below the surface. Match the drill to the screw gauge and head style. Softwood and treated pine usually drive without pre-drilling.

Match the driver bit to your screw's drive recess and your hand tool. A 50mm bit works in a drill or impact driver; a 75mm to 150mm bit gives extra reach when the joist sits below board level (thicker boards, subframe corners, second-storey decks). Replace bits roughly every 500 screws on hardwood and every 1000 on softwood. A worn bit cams out and strips heads, which costs more than a new bit.
