Holesaws and Accessories

Holesaws and Accessories

Holesaws and Accessories (also known as Hole Saw, Bi-Metal Cobalt Holesaw or Cup Saw) are Bi-Metal Cobalt holesaws and matching arbors for large-diameter clean holes in steel, stainless, timber and plastic. BNA stocks 71+ of these ex stock from our Brisbane warehouse, covering the full range of diameters, lengths and shank styles that engineers, tradies, manufacturers and DIY users need for everyday drilling tasks. Same-day dispatch on online orders placed before 1pm.

Also known as: Hole Saw, Bi-Metal Cobalt Holesaw, Cup Saw.

Drill Bit Construction & Materials

Bi-Metal Cobalt Tooth The cutting teeth are an HSS Cobalt edge bonded to a tough spring-steel body via electron-beam welding. Cobalt content lifts operating temperature to ~700 degrees C, which is what enables continuous cutting in stainless without dulling.

Spring Steel Body The cup body is heat-treated spring steel. Tough enough to flex under the cut without cracking, hard enough to resist wear from chip contact. Most BNA holesaws have a heat-blued body finish.

HSS Pilot Drill The pilot drill in the centre of the arbor is standard HSS jobber stock, sized 6mm or 6.35mm typically. Replaceable when it snaps; the holesaw itself usually outlasts several pilots.

Hardened Arbor The arbor that mounts the holesaw on the drill chuck is heat-treated through-hardened steel. The threaded mount on top accepts the 1/2-20 (or similar) thread on the holesaw cup.

Drive & Use

Mount the holesaw onto the arbor (right-hand thread, hand-tight is fine — the cutting action keeps it engaged). The pilot drill threads into the arbor centre. The whole assembly mounts in the drill chuck.

RPM is roughly half what a twist drill at the same diameter would run. Cup teeth take a much longer cut path per revolution and overheat quickly. A 32mm holesaw in steel runs ~500-700 RPM; a 76mm holesaw runs 200-300 RPM.

Withdraw every 5mm-10mm of cut to clear chips out of the cup. Otherwise the slug binds, the saw stalls, and the drill jerks the operator. A few drops of cutting fluid on the cut keeps teeth sharp longer.

Stainless and hardened steel: use fluid, run slow, don't push hard. The cobalt teeth are made for stainless. Standard HSS holesaws die in stainless within a hole or two.

Removing the slug: the pilot drill hole gives a screwdriver something to lever against. Push the slug out from the back through the chip-clearing slots in the cup. Don't try to chisel it out by hand — the teeth are sharp and the slug is hot.

Sizing & Measurements

Diameter range 14mm to 114mm+ in standard step intervals. Common installer sizes (16mm, 20mm, 25mm, 32mm, 38mm, 51mm, 65mm, 76mm) stocked in depth.

Length range Cup depth is typically 38mm-43mm so the saw will cut through standard sheet metal, plywood, MDF and timber up to about 38mm thick in one pass. Deeper-cup variants exist for joists.

Shank The HOLESAW itself threads onto an arbor. The ARBOR has a quick-release hex shank or a round shank, depending on style. Hex shank fits impact drivers and quick-change holders. Round shank fits standard drill chucks.

For pipe and conduit penetrations, check the actual OD (not the nominal pipe size) and add 1mm-2mm clearance. Nominal 25mm pipe is often 33.4mm OD.

For electrical glands and bushings, the manufacturer prints the hole size on the box. Common: 20mm gland needs a 20.5mm holesaw; 25mm gland needs a 25.5mm holesaw.

For bolt clearance through panels, holesaw diameter = bolt diameter plus 0.5mm-1mm. M16 bolt = 16.5mm-17mm holesaw.
