Torx Bits

Torx driver bits (T10 through T45 and beyond) engage the six-point star recess on Torx fasteners. Torx is the highest-torque cross-recess in common use - the lobes transfer load perpendicular to the bit centreline, which gives ~30% higher torque capacity than Phillips at the same tip size. Standard on automotive, electronic, white-goods and high-spec self-tapping screws.

The Torx number (T10, T15, T20 etc) references the Torx standard ISO 10664 - it is NOT a millimetre dimension. T25 is bigger than T20 but the gap isn't 5mm. Match the bit to the screw by looking at the printed T-number on the screw head, or by trial-fit at the lowest T-size that engages the full recess without forcing. Post Torx (security) variants use a centre-hole bit to clear the central security pin.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Alloy Tool Steel is the standard Torx bits material. Heat-treated to a hardness around 60 HRC at the tip for wear resistance, with a slightly softer shank to absorb torsional shock. Most bits are supplied with a bright finish. Alpha (Sheffield Group) bits are the workhorse stock here; Sutton Tools and Hobson Engineering carry equivalent grades.

Alloy Tool Steel, Black Finish is the impact-rated variant - tempering profile tuned for higher fatigue resistance under impact-driver blows. Use these on Torx bits that see constant cordless-impact work. Bright-finish bits in an impact driver will snap at the hex shank after 50 to 200 blows.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Insert the bit into a 1/4" hex chuck or a magnetic bit holder. Verify the bit tip matches the fastener recess exactly - undersized bits cam out and strip the recess on the first install. Apply firm axial pressure during driving so the bit stays fully seated. For high-volume work, use power-length bits (50mm+) with a torsion zone to absorb impact-driver hammer blows.

Torx is well-suited to impact-driver use - the load surfaces tolerate the hammer blows better than Phillips/Pozi. T15 fits #6/#8 self-tappers; T20 fits #10/M5; T25 fits #12/M6; T30 fits M8; T40-T45 for larger machine screws and Coach-style timber assemblies. Premium Quality alloy variants are available where bit life on long stainless self-tappers is critical.

A NOTE ON BIT WEAR AND CAM-OUT

Torx bits are wear items. Match the bit to the fastener recess exactly, lean into the drive so the bit stays fully seated, and replace bits at the first sign of tip rounding. Cam-out (bit slipping out of the recess under torque) is the failure mode - it strips the fastener recess and wears the bit tip simultaneously. If you're seeing cam-out, the bit is either wrong-size or worn.

Sized by Torx T-number (T8 to T45 stocked). Length options: 25mm insert, 50mm to 75mm power-length. Torx geometry tolerates higher install torque than any other cross-recess; pair with impact-rated bits for cordless driver work on long timber and metal-stud assemblies.
