Bit Holders

1/4" hex shank bit holders with C-ring or magnetic retention. The holder chucks into the driver and accepts a 1/4" hex insert bit at the working end. Use a bit holder to extend reach, swap bits without re-chucking, or magnetically retain the screw against the bit during start-up.

Distinct from socket adapters which convert 1/4" hex to square drive. A bit holder accepts a 1/4" hex bit at BOTH ends - the driver chuck end and the working end. Magnetic holders also retain the screw head against the bit so you can start the screw one-handed.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Alloy Tool Steel with C-ring or magnetic retention. Alpha (Sheffield Group) bit holders are the workhorse stock; Hobson Engineering stainless variants are available where the holder itself needs corrosion resistance. The C-ring is a spring-steel retainer that snaps over the bit shank to hold it against axial pull-out; magnetic versions use a rare-earth magnet behind the bit socket.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Insert the bit into a 1/4" hex chuck or a magnetic bit holder. Verify the bit tip matches the fastener recess exactly - undersized bits cam out and strip the recess on the first install. Apply firm axial pressure during driving so the bit stays fully seated. For high-volume work, use power-length bits (50mm+) with a torsion zone to absorb impact-driver hammer blows.

Insert the holder hex shank into the driver chuck. Push the bit into the holder working end until it clicks past the C-ring (or seats against the magnet). The bit can now be swapped quickly without removing the holder from the chuck. For tight clearance work, use a short 54mm or 60mm holder; for reach into recessed assemblies, use the longer 100mm+ variants.

A NOTE ON BIT WEAR AND CAM-OUT

Bit holders are wear items. Match the bit to the fastener recess exactly, lean into the drive so the bit stays fully seated, and replace bits at the first sign of tip rounding. Cam-out (bit slipping out of the recess under torque) is the failure mode - it strips the fastener recess and wears the bit tip simultaneously. If you're seeing cam-out, the bit is either wrong-size or worn.

SIZING AND LENGTHS

1/4" hex shank at both ends - fits any standard 1/4" hex chuck and accepts any 1/4" hex insert bit. Length options: 54mm, 65mm, 100mm and longer. Magnetic variants suit small-fastener start-up; non-magnetic C-ring variants are for high-torque work where the magnetic pull might dislodge the bit.
