Button & Wafer Timber Screws

Button & Wafer Timber Screws
Not sure what screw size you have or need?
Two ways to confirm before you order - whichever you already know.
1If you have a screw in hand

Measure across the outside of the thread - not the shank - to get the gauge (an 8g screw measures about 4.2mm). Screw gauges have a wider tolerance than bolts, so treat it as a close match rather than exact. Then measure the length - countersunk timber screws are measured overall, head included.

2If you know the gauge

Every product page carries a Screw Gauge and TPI chart for its range - every gauge links straight to the product. Rule of thumb for timber: coarse threads for softwood and framing, fine threads for hardwood.

T17 timber screw side profile showing where to measure

T17 timber screw - gauge is measured across the thread.

Button and Wafer head timber screws are low-profile alternatives to the hex flange for sheet-on-timber fastening. The flat head form clamps cladding firmly without protruding past the cladding face, so downstream cladding layers or finish coats sit flat over the fastener.

Also known as: Wafer Head Timber Screw, Pancake Head Screw, Button Head Stitching Screw, Pan Head Timber Screw.

8g-15 gauge with full thread, lengths 12mm-15mm. Phillips PH2 drive. Needle Point self drilling tip. Zinc Yellow Class 4 finish. Used for thin-sheet cladding fastening into timber framing where head profile matters.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Zinc Yellow (Class 2): zinc plate with a yellow chromate passivation - interior and dry, sheltered work. Galvanised (Class 3, 4, B8 and X9): galvanised finishes for exterior and structural work and treated-pine exposure - the higher the class, the harsher the environment it suits. Higher Classes and painted variants available.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Drive with PH2 Phillips at 1500-2500 RPM. Set driver torque to seat the head firmly without dimpling the cladding face. The flat seat clamps cladding to timber without the protrusion of a hex flange head.

SIZE AND THREAD

8g-15 (4.20mm shank), 12mm and 15mm lengths. Suits cladding-to-timber stack of ~5-10mm total. For thicker substrate stacks, switch to the Hex Flange variant.
