Cross Dowel Nut

Cross Dowel Nut

Cross Dowel Nuts are the slotted-top cousin of the barrel nut - same cylindrical body, same cross-bored installation, same JCB-bolt mating - with the addition of a slotted top face that lets you align the internal threads with a flat-blade screwdriver during assembly. The slot makes life easier when the dowel rotates inside the cross-bored hole and the threads need lining up precisely with the incoming bolt. Used interchangeably with barrel nuts on most knock-down furniture and flat-pack designs.

Also known as: Cross dowel, cross dowel nut, slotted barrel nut, slotted dowel nut, JCB cross dowel, KD cross dowel, alignment dowel nut.

Identical thread family to barrel nuts: M6 and M8 metric coarse, sized to match JCB connector bolts. The slotted top is the only functional difference - it serves as an alignment feature during assembly, not as a torque feature (the bolt does the torque).

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Zinc Plated Steel - the standard indoor finish, hidden inside the timber so corrosion resistance only needs to handle indoor humidity.

Stainless Steel A2-70 G304 - upgrade for kitchen wet zones, bathroom and outdoor furniture, or any joint that pairs with a stainless JCB bolt. The same corrosion-resistant grade as our stainless JCB bolts so there are no galvanic concerns.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

The slot in the top face takes a standard flat-blade screwdriver - 5-6mm blade for M6 / M8 cross dowels. Insert the dowel into the cross-bored hole, line up the threads with the incoming bolt using the screwdriver in the slot, then pass the JCB bolt through and tighten with the hex key. The dowel doesn't spin once the bolt threads engage - the slot is just for the initial alignment.

If the cross-bored hole is slightly oversized and the dowel keeps rotating during assembly, the slot lets you hold the dowel still while a helper drives the JCB bolt home from the other side.

A NOTE ON GALLING

Same stainless galling concern as JCB / barrel combinations. Tighten slowly; anti-seize on stainless threads; no impact drivers on stainless.

COMMON APPLICATIONS

Cross dowel nuts solve the same problem as barrel nuts with one extra feature:

  • Tight-tolerance flat-pack assembly - when the cross-bored hole is slightly oversized and the barrel keeps rotating out of alignment, the slotted top lets you hold it precisely with a flat-blade screwdriver while the JCB bolt engages.
  • Field service - tradies installing or repairing furniture on site appreciate the slot; it saves having to drop the panel and re-orient a plain barrel that has rotated out of alignment.
  • High-cycle disassembly furniture - exhibition stands, trade show booths, rental furniture. After many assembly cycles the cross-bored hole wears slightly and the barrel becomes loose; the slotted version is faster to re-align each time.
  • Mass-production flat-pack - some manufacturers spec cross dowels over plain barrels because the slotted version is easier for the end customer to assemble at home (no rotation issues).

THREAD LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS

The renderer auto-emits the per-SKU dimensions table from the product master on the live page. Length, thread length, drive size, head dimensions and pack quantity are all populated row-by-row when the SEO file goes live - no need to duplicate that data here. Use the table on the live page to confirm the exact SKU you need.
