Auger Bits Heavy Duty

Heavy Duty Auger Bits (also known as Hex Shank Auger, Self-Feed Auger or Framing Auger) are heavy-duty timber augers with a 7/16-inch hex shank and a self-feeding screw-tip pilot, designed to bore deep clean holes under power. Drill Bit Construction & Materials

Hardened Tool Steel Body Through-hardened high-carbon tool steel. The helical flutes are forged or precision-machined for fast chip clearance. The cutting edges are heat-treated to retain sharpness through hardwoods and softwoods alike.

Screw-Tip Pilot The centre tip is a sharp screw with aggressive thread pitch. As the auger rotates, the screw pulls the bit through the timber under its own power. No operator pressure required once the cut starts.

Spurred Cutting Edges Two side spurs score the rim of the hole before the main cutter lifts the chip. This gives a clean hole wall with minimal tear-out, even in cross-grain cuts.

Drive & Use

Use in a battery (cordless) or 240V corded electric power drill with a 1/2-inch chuck, or a corded right-angle drill for stud work. Auger bits are not for impact drivers. Cordless 18V/40V tools handle most diameters; larger augers in hardwood need mains-corded torque.

Technique: position the screw tip, run forward at moderate speed, let the screw self-feed. No operator pressure required after the screw engages. If the auger stalls, withdraw and clear the flute — packed chips bind the bit and stall the drill.

For deep holes: drill in stages. Run forward 75mm-100mm, withdraw to clear chips, advance again. Continuous forced deep cuts pack the flute and break the drive.

Withdraw under power with the drill still running forward; reversing under load can snap the bit at the shank shoulder. If the auger is stuck, stop, free it by hand, then withdraw under power.

To avoid back-face splinter: drill until the screw-tip just pokes through, then flip the work and finish from the other side. Or clamp a sacrificial backing board behind the work.

Sizing & Measurements

Diameter range 10mm to 25mm+ in standard increments. Common framing sizes (16mm, 19mm, 22mm, 25mm) stocked deepest. Larger 32mm-38mm variants for plumbing rough-ins.

Length range Working lengths from 205mm to 457mm. The 205mm and 235mm sizes for stud-wall electrical chases. 305mm-381mm for joist drilling. 457mm for through-wall plumbing.

Shank 7/16-inch (11mm) hex shank — the heavy-duty timber-boring standard. Fits Milwaukee, Makita and DeWalt right-angle drills and standard 1/2-inch drill chucks. Quick-release in compatible chucks.

Auger diameter = bolt/screw clearance plus 1mm-2mm. M12 coach screw needs a 14mm-16mm clearance hole (the screw cuts its own thread; the clearance is for the shank).

For pipe and conduit chases, match diameter to outside diameter plus 5mm-10mm for routing room. 19mm conduit needs at least a 25mm chase hole.

Length: pick the shortest auger that will reach the far face. Excess length on a long auger flexes under load and drifts off-axis. A 305mm auger in a 90mm wall is wasteful and harder to control.
