Combination Drill & Taps

Combination drill-taps combine the pilot drill and the cutting tap into a single tool. Drill the hole and cut the thread in one operation, without changing tools. Ideal for sheet metal, thin plate, electrical enclosures, mounting plates and quick on-site repair work where the operator doesn't want to swap a drill bit for a tap mid-job.
Also known as: Drill Tap, Drill-Tap, Combination Tap, Combo Tap, Drilling Tap, Alpha Drill Tap, Carded Drill Tap.
The Alpha HSS combination drill-tap range covers metric coarse from M3 through M12 in a single-pack carded format. Each tool drills its own pilot at the tip and cuts the thread on the body in one continuous pass - a 6mm-thick mild steel plate becomes a tapped M8 hole in around 10 seconds of drill time.
GRADES AND MATERIALS
HSS: High-speed steel cutting body. Holds edge through extensive use in mild steel and aluminium - the typical hosts for combination tapping work. For continued use in stainless plate, expect shorter tool life - the dedicated spiral-point HSSE taps are the better choice for stainless production work.
DRIVE AND INSTALLATION
Drive in a corded drill, cordless drill or impact driver. No tap wrench required. Run at moderate speed (500-800 RPM in steel, faster in aluminium) with cutting oil applied to the tip. The drill section consumes the first few millimetres of travel, then the tap section begins cutting. Continue until the full thread depth is achieved - usually one full plate thickness for sheet work. Reverse out under power - chips clear naturally.
Best results in plate thickness up to ~1.5 times the nominal thread diameter (an M8 drill-tap is ideal for 6-12mm plate). For deeper holes, drill the pilot separately with a standard drill and finish-tap with a dedicated spiral flute or hand tap.
THREAD LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS
Combination drill-tap thread length is set by the tap section of the tool - typically 1 to 1.5 diameters of usable thread. The renderer auto-emits the per-SKU drill diameter, pitch and thread length.
