Phillips Bits

Phillips driver bits (PH0 through PH4) are the workhorse cross-recess bits for general screw driving. The cross-shaped tip engages the Phillips recess on the fastener so torque transfers cleanly from the driver to the screw. PH2 is the most-used size, fitting the vast majority of timber screws, self-tappers and machine screws sold in Australia.

The Phillips recess was designed in the 1930s to cam-out when over-tightened - the bit lifts out of the recess at the design torque, protecting the screw and the driver. That makes Phillips the most forgiving cross-recess for hand-driver use but the LEAST suitable for high-torque impact-driver work. For impact-driver assembly, switch to Pozi, Torx or Square bits.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Alloy Tool Steel is the standard Phillips bits material. Heat-treated to a hardness around 60 HRC at the tip for wear resistance, with a slightly softer shank to absorb torsional shock. Most bits are supplied with a bright finish. Alpha (Sheffield Group) bits are the workhorse stock here; Sutton Tools and Hobson Engineering carry equivalent grades.

Alloy Tool Steel, Black Finish is the impact-rated variant - tempering profile tuned for higher fatigue resistance under impact-driver blows. Use these on Phillips bits that see constant cordless-impact work. Bright-finish bits in an impact driver will snap at the hex shank after 50 to 200 blows.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Insert the bit into a 1/4" hex chuck or a magnetic bit holder. Verify the bit tip matches the fastener recess exactly - undersized bits cam out and strip the recess on the first install. Apply firm axial pressure during driving so the bit stays fully seated. For high-volume work, use power-length bits (50mm+) with a torsion zone to absorb impact-driver hammer blows.

PH0 fits small electronics screws; PH1 fits #6 / #8 wood screws; PH2 fits #10 / #12 / M5 / M6 screws; PH3 fits Coach screws and large fasteners; PH4 is rare, used on heavy structural Phillips.

A NOTE ON BIT WEAR AND CAM-OUT

Phillips bits are wear items. Match the bit to the fastener recess exactly, lean into the drive so the bit stays fully seated, and replace bits at the first sign of tip rounding. Cam-out (bit slipping out of the recess under torque) is the failure mode - it strips the fastener recess and wears the bit tip simultaneously. If you're seeing cam-out, the bit is either wrong-size or worn.

SIZING AND LENGTHS

Sized PH0 through PH4 by the cross-recess tip dimension. Length options: 25mm insert (the original short shank), 50mm to 90mm power-length (with torsion zone for impact-driver work), and 116mm long for Hilti collated autofeed tools. Match the bit number to the screw recess - a PH1 bit in a PH2 recess will cam out under load.
