Pozi Bits

Pozidriv driver bits (PZ1, PZ2, PZ3) are the cross-recess upgrade for cam-out resistance. The Pozi recess looks like a Phillips with four extra small radial ribs between the cross arms - those ribs let the bit engage the recess with significantly less tendency to lift out under torque. Used across European-made screws and most treated-timber assembly screws.

Also known as: PZ Bits, Pozidriv Bits, Pozidriv Insert Bits, Pozi Power Bits, ACR (Anti Cam-out Ribs) Bits.

Pozi and Phillips are NOT interchangeable. A PH bit in a PZ recess will cam out; a PZ bit in a PH recess will round out the Phillips recess. Tell them apart by looking at the screw head from above: cross only = Phillips; cross plus four small radial ticks = Pozi. PZ2 is the most-common size.

GRADES AND MATERIALS

Alloy Tool Steel is the standard Pozi bits material. Heat-treated to a hardness around 60 HRC at the tip for wear resistance, with a slightly softer shank to absorb torsional shock. Most bits are supplied with a bright finish. Alpha (Sheffield Group) bits are the workhorse stock here; Sutton Tools and Hobson Engineering carry equivalent grades.

Alloy Tool Steel, Black Finish is the impact-rated variant - tempering profile tuned for higher fatigue resistance under impact-driver blows. Use these on Pozi bits that see constant cordless-impact work. Bright-finish bits in an impact driver will snap at the hex shank after 50 to 200 blows.

DRIVE AND INSTALLATION

Insert the bit into a 1/4" hex chuck or a magnetic bit holder. Verify the bit tip matches the fastener recess exactly - undersized bits cam out and strip the recess on the first install. Apply firm axial pressure during driving so the bit stays fully seated. For high-volume work, use power-length bits (50mm+) with a torsion zone to absorb impact-driver hammer blows.

PZ1 fits small fasteners and electronics; PZ2 fits #8 / #10 / M5 / M6 timber and machine screws; PZ3 fits #12 / M8+ and Coach-style assembly screws. The radial ribs in the Pozi recess require a Pozi bit - using a Phillips bit defeats the cam-out resistance and rounds the recess.

A NOTE ON BIT WEAR AND CAM-OUT

Pozi bits are wear items. Match the bit to the fastener recess exactly, lean into the drive so the bit stays fully seated, and replace bits at the first sign of tip rounding. Cam-out (bit slipping out of the recess under torque) is the failure mode - it strips the fastener recess and wears the bit tip simultaneously. If you're seeing cam-out, the bit is either wrong-size or worn.

SIZING AND LENGTHS

Sized PZ1, PZ2, PZ3 by tip dimension. Length options: 25mm insert, 50mm to 75mm power-length, 90mm long. The radial ribs mean Pozi tolerates higher install torque than Phillips at the same tip size - well suited to cordless impact driving of timber and structural screws.
