Wave Spring Roll Pins

Wave spring roll pins (JIS B 2808:1999) use a wave-tooth profile rather than a single longitudinal slot. The waves distribute radial spring force more evenly around the pin circumference, giving better hole-wall grip without stress-concentration at a slot edge. Used where the pin sees repeated load reversal, vibration or rotational cycling - pivots in moving assemblies, pulley shaft retention, light-duty rotational locating.

Like all spring roll pins, wave pins have no thread and no head. The wave profile is rolled into the sleeve so the pin compresses radially in the hole. The waves give wave roll pins more elastic give than slotted pins, making them more tolerant of host hole variation and better at absorbing shock loads.
GRADES AND MATERIALS
G420 Martensitic Stainless - the standard wave-pin material. G420 is a hardenable chromium stainless heat-treated to a high spring temper. The martensitic structure gives the spring force needed for retention while providing modest corrosion resistance suitable for indoor / dry / oiled-assembly use. G420 IS magnetic by design - the higher hardness comes from a martensitic crystal structure.
G420 is not equivalent to A2 / G304 or A4 / G316 for marine or chloride exposure. For chloride or salt-spray service, specify A2 or A4 stainless spring roll pins from the slotted range instead.
DRIVE AND INSTALLATION
Wave spring roll pins drive identically to slotted pins - flat-face hammer or soft mallet directly down the pin axis. The wave profile gives slightly more elastic give than a slotted pin, so wave pins tolerate marginal hole oversizing better than slotted equivalents. Still, match the hole size to suit (listed in the product specifications table) for the rated spring force.
Removal is by driving through with a parallel pin punch from the opposite side. Wave pins recover better from a single removal than slotted pins because the radial force is distributed across the wave profile, but in fatigue-cycled assemblies, plan on fresh pins at scheduled maintenance intervals.
A NOTE ON GALLING
G420 martensitic stainless has a different crystal structure to austenitic A2 / A4 stainless and is less prone to galling against itself or other steels. Still, if wave pins are being driven into a stainless host hole, a light anti-seize lubricant is a sensible precaution. Avoid hammering at an angle that wedges the pin against one hole wall.
LENGTH AND MEASUREMENTS
Length is measured end-to-end, same as slotted spring roll pins. JIS B 2808:1999 specifies the wave profile dimensions, host hole size to suit, and rated radial spring force for each nominal diameter. Match the length to the combined thickness of the parts being pinned.
