Hand pads are non-woven abrasive sheets used by hand for surface conditioning, light rust removal, weld preparation and final cleanup. Effectively the Scotch-Brite equivalent - flexible, doesn't load up, and reaches into contours where a flat disc can't.
Also known as: Scotch-Brite Pad, Non-Woven Pad, Surface Conditioning Pad, Maroon Pad, Brown Pad.
Klingspor NPA400 non-woven hand pads in 152mm x 229mm sheet size. Two grades stocked: coarse (brown) for rust removal and weld prep, very fine (maroon) for final cleanup and brushed-finish maintenance.
GRIT AND GRAIN
Non-woven nylon fibre with bonded abrasive grain (aluminium oxide for coarse, silicon carbide for very fine). The non-woven structure resists loading on contaminated surfaces. Pads are washable (rinse with water and a stiff brush) and can be reused until the abrasive surface is fully worn.
USAGE AND TECHNIQUE
Use dry or with water / light oil depending on the substrate. Light pressure - the pad conforms to the surface and the abrasive cuts at the contact area. Direction-stroke the pad in the direction of the desired grain finish (cross-stroking leaves visible swirl marks). Cut sheets to size with shears for confined-access work.
SAFETY AND RPM
Hand pads are passive - no RPM, no rotating hazard. Standard glove use for grip and to protect hands from sharp metal edges. Eye protection if hand-pad fragments could flick into the eye during heavy work.
